I went to check cows a little while ago and have a cow with symptoms I haven't seen before. She is staggering, one side of her face seems to have some paralysis, drooling. She calved out a few weeks ago, on just pasture. Called my vet, she is thinking Listeria and suggested a high dose of penicillin. Just looking for other opinions.

Sounds a little like grass tetany. Is that a problem in your area? You don't have long to save her if it is. She would need an IV of calcium/magnesium. One IV and in a few hours she will be good as ever if it is grass tetany. Untreated you have a dead cow in the same amount of time.

That was my first guess, never dealt with it before. I'm not at home, this is from my phone.

My vet doesn't think it's tetany due to only one side of the face being effected.
