Silent herder

Does anyone have experience using this product, pros or cons?

Never used it, but have heard it works.

I think it was developed by a fellow around Bozeman, Mt. a long time
ago.

What do you intend to use it for? Bloat in cattle?

When we had so much trouble with Pulmonary Emphasema
(some call it asthma) in cattle, we did hear that Silent Herder
helped with that as well.

But we have never used it ourselves.

Yes sorry, bloat would be the main reason.

Bill give Garry Jones at Crane Valley a call. I am pretty sure he has used that stuff for a while. Or try Roy Rutledge. He was bringing it in from the US.

We have used it with good success on an alfalfa / sainfoin pastur. Some other tools we used were
1. free choice straw in feeders
2. initially put cattle out with a belly full of feed
3. idenfy the cows that do show bloat because there is a genetic factor in bloat chronic bloaters and valuable bulls are given rumensin boluses
4. watch for heavey dew or rain and move cattle off the alfalfa
5. rotate cattle through the alfalfa (they are more prone to bloat on small plants crowning) we used elcetric cross fences to make 10 acre paddocks.
6. check in early morning as that is when we have found bloat incedences the highest.
7. put the silent herder in many places throughout the field (every couple of acres)
