Look at the weights when cattle are sold in your area. I doubt that you
find many, if any, older cows that weigh 1000#. We have found from
weighing cattle at home, that cows lose 100# where ever they are sold,
near or far, they seem to lose about the same weight.
That bigger cow is said to be from 'frame creep'. You add all the performance
that is available when you buy bulls, get yearling weight EPDS @ 100+ and
you are going to have bigger cows. No doubt about it. Not saything that's
a bad thing for everyone, but going back to my comment about 1000#
cows just aren't out there. Nowdays even first calf heifers come close to
that or even more.
I remember when we first started out, 700# was the acceptable weight
for a first calf heifer. In fact, when we started out, the ranch we leased
on shares didn't breed their heifers to calve as 2's, they bred them to
calve as 3's. And that's a whole other can of worms. Those 3 year olds
that didn't calve as twos are big and dumb and many don't even want
anything to do with a calf. So that didn't last very long til the share
people changed to calving their heifers as 2's. They just thought by
waiting til their 3 year old year, the heifers would be bigger. And they
probably were. Darn sure a bigger problem...
