In the barn, in the tack room, on the dogs, on Mr. FH...
don't know who gets attention first!!!!!! Holy cow, what a mess.
That stuff must be a film that settles over everything.
We had some Febreeze on hand, and lo and behold!!!!
It worked!!! On the dogs, in the tack room, in the barn,
worked on everything. Really got rid of the smell just by spraying
it around and on everything...even the dog. Poor dog!

Just thought you'd like to know. Amazing Product!!!!

YIKES!!!

Glad the Febreeze worked! If the skunk is dead, and he was seen during the day, you might call your vet (I think that's who) and have him rabies tested. Generally their nocturnal, so to be seen during the day means somethings up. And, rabies is diagnosed in skunks more than any other species.

Glad everyone's ok.

While we're talking about rabies...folks should remember to give rabies vaccinations to their horses too.

There are some interesting cases in the country (one recently in ND) that entail horses being diagnosed with rabies about the same time that they had contact with lots of humans...

The details in the ND case include an infected horse, a Fourth of July parade which over 50 people had close exposure to the horse, and all those folks plus many others going through the series of prophylactic shots, after the horse was diagnosed with rabies less than a week after the parade.

We have several neighbors and friends (one of whom is here on ranchers.net) that have been through the series of shots because of exposure to either rabies infected cattle (in most cases) or horses.

In my opinion, rabies is the scariest of all zoonotic (meaning that there is animal to human transmission of the disease, like TB, Brucellosis, Anthrax, etc.) diseases, and maybe all diseases. If a human (or other animal) is infected, their chances of survival are slim to none---whereas almost all other diseases have some course of treatment available. There is no effective treatment for rabies.

My edit: I mistyped FMD...it is not contracted by humans...geez, brain fart there today. Good grief!!! Sorry!

We've shot 38 skunks (several were litters of 5-7) on the north place this year- we've never seen them so thick...Lot of them were in or around the barn, because we feed the cats in there to keep the coyotes and eagles from getting them all....And the biggest share of these were in the daytime- but I don't think anything was wrong with them....Can't figure out where they came from this year...Between that and the visiting mountain lion, coons getting in the grainery, and the beavers cutting down all the trees- been an interesting wildlife year up there....

When in Western Montana, we took the fresh roping steers to our
place to feed them up and get them strong for roping. One steer died
after being doctored. Oh, yea, they tubed him and were messing around
in his mouth. One vet called and asked Mr. FH to skin him so he could
have the hide for whatever reason. They did send the head in and it
came back positive for rabies. Mr. FH, 2 vets and their assistants and
two other guys who handled the steer had to go in for the series of
shots. I think the cost was $400 for each person (volume discount).
Luckily, they didn't have to have the shots in their stomach, but
it still wasn't enjoyable.

They figured a rabid skunk had bit the steer and he contracted the
disease.

FH,

If you have any trouble getting the smell out of the dogs , clothes or even MR FH. Tomato juice works like a darn. I have seen people use it and it works.

Here is another "home remedy" for getting rid of skunk odor.....

1 quart of hydrogen peroxide
1/2 cup of baking soda
a few drops of dish soap

You can wash kids, dogs or clothes with it and it works like a charm.

Yes....... This is what I used when ameego talked me into lifting up a wooden pellet..... He said it was a mouse..... WRONG... We both got sprayed and was banned from the house.... We both had to get into the tub and lock the door till we were squieky clean and white.....

I'm glad to see that skunk story, OT. That makes me feel a lot better. I had one last year that had denned up in the wall of a shop building. At least, that's what I thought. I had only seen one and barely smelled her once or twice, so I thought that was all I had. After trapping 14 of them, one a day, out of the same hole, I finally cleaned them out.

Faster horses, I might add that my wife finally discovered the Febreeze trick, too. I had gotten to the point that I was going to have to start throwing the traps away because she wouldn't wash my coveralls after taking skunks out of the traps. She really didn't even want me in the house. Febreeze saved traps, Carharts, marriage, etc.

Don't really bother them as they don't really bother me.. Our yard guardian dog Yeti the semi cripple Pyr does a good job of keeping critters out of the yard...

Had a family in one of the pastures a few years ago.. Would see them every night at sunset walking across the field... So cute.

We also had a pet skunk when I was a kid. When people came knocking on the door, and Stinky came to answer like the little guard skunk she was, the people would be backing up as fast as their legs would carry them!

Don't know if there has ever been a reportred sighting of a skunk in these parts, and certainly no 'coons. Thank the Lord. We do have packrats (ugh!) and weasels. Had a weasel in the house a couple of years ago, and mrs Silver thought it was real cute. I told her she'd only think that until the cat surprised it. Sure enough, minutes later cat and weasel met face to face beside the couch..... needless to say the house emptied, and stayed empty with doors open for several hours. :?

I had a pet one as a kid they are pretty cool little critters. We shoot them in the yard but other than that they get a free pass.

A guy here used to catch them and have them descented and sell them as pets. Their population here has really decreased over the years. About the prettiest little animal I ever saw was a solid white skunk. They like to get the grubworms in our pastures. I don't bother them and they don't bother me.
