Finally, I got in here.......been trying for almost 2 hours!!!!!!!!!

So, did we decide it would be better to decrease Tillie's grain gradually, after the Fair is over this weekend, or just cut her off cold turkey?

Thanks, sorry I can't remember for sure, and don't want to mess up........

I never saw the first post, if there was one. However, you never want to pull something off of feed cold turkey. We always like to cut the feed to 75% for one week, then back off to 50% for a week, then cut it to a quarter for a week. All the while making sure they have plenty of grass or hay. This will help all the rumen microbes re adjust to their natural state of digesting forage rather than a high starch diet.

Ok, thanks! That's what I was thinking, but Al said she's not really "addicted" to her grain, so wants to just go cold turkey.

So............we're off to the Fair this morning, steer and heifer weigh-in between 10 and noon today, shows at 6 this evening, check in stuff in the exhibit barn from 5-8, pig weigh-in between 6 and 8...........a full day for us!

Hubby said if they get rained out, he might come over to watch the cattle shows......Keep your fingers crossed for RAIN!!!!!!!!!!! I know it would mean a lot to Al, for his dad to be there for his first cattle show. Hubby's more concerned with getting this $2500 tranny paid for. I'm thinking, Al's only going to have one first cattle show, and Hubby only makes about $150 a day (on a good day) which could be made up eventually.........Guess that's the "female" side of me coming out, the kids come first...............

Good luck to Al in all his Fair Projects.

We are very fortunate that Mr Lilly could take off work basically the whole week of fair to be there to watch, not to mention help load and unload critters LOL

Every thing we've ever read and have been told about takin an animal off feed is to do it gradually. So that's what we do with the 2 heifers we have left over when lil Lilly shows her pen of three commercial heifers. (Start with 5 and show/sell 3 of them) So the other two come back home and are gradually taken off feed. It's easier to do that than to have a wreck with one you've spent so much time and money on.

You were asking about bred heifer shows....I don't know what they do in your area, but you might check out and see if they have a commercial heifer division.

BTW what grade is Al in? You mentioned him bein interested in Sul Ross and he and Lil Lilly bein able to pal around......

Lilly, he's a Senior this year. By homeschooling, he's been able to finish the first 3 years of high school, in less than 2 years. In fact, this weekend marks the end of the second year since he got his first lessons. He spent the Fair weekend of 2004, in my dad's camper trailer, with his broken leg propped up on the couch, starting school. We fully expect him to be graduated before 2006 is over...........at the ripe ole age of 16.........

They do have an Open show for cattle here, if anyone cares to enter. I'm thinking may just have Al do that, for the experience, if nothing else.....never hurts to have more practice, especially if I can talk him into taking the little Brangus bull we have on the milk cow right now, next year.......

Thanks for the luck.......I'm sure he'll appreciate it when I tell him. He's out gathering stuff up, to get ready to go, right now. Spent all our time yesterday, when we planned to do that, trying to find a trailer hitch (ours seems to have disappeared while the pickup was in the shop for 2 months and a week  ).......finally found one about 7:30, by the time we got it off the other pickup and on this one, it was 8:00......then chores and supper to do, Al took a bath and we were in bed (finally  ) by 10.

Don't ya hate lookin for stuff ya can't find? Well if mom's not gonna let him apply for college until he's 18 there won't be that much difference in when they get to Alpine. LOL Lil Lilly is 15 (Soph) even tho she don't look it.

Speakin of lookin for somethin.....a few years ago, I can't remember what it was we were doin, but Mr Lilly sent me to the house after a rope. Said to HURRY!!!! Well I buzz to the house.....for a rope...can't find one anywhere!!!!!! Then it dawned on me...there was one in the tree that they used to hang their deer when they skin em. It's on a pully. Well the pully is umpteen feet up in the air......I had to get a rake to reach the end of the rope and pull it down...naturally it had the knot in the end....was a ropin rope. I was gettin just a lil bit crabby because things weren't workin my way, and they were in a bind needin a rope pronto.......yeap you got it......our choppin block and double bit axe are there fairly close to that tree......I whacked the end offa that rope so I could get it outta the pully. Then got down there to the shop, and he wanted to know...."why'd ya cut the end of the rope off?"........I gave him a look........and he said..."never mind" LOL

Thanks, FH! We're doing the gradual cut-off........a little harder, since he moved her over into the pasture across the road, with the butcher steer and his horses.........has a few more critters to keep run off, so she can eat.......

Oh, by the way, we have a Grand Champion here now!!!!!!!! :D I'll tell the rest of the story  on it's own topic...........
