Janet Riley - Public Relations Director - AMI:

"It's time for these producers to stop focusing on their growing bank accounts and start focusing on the mothers and children that are struggling to afford beef."

Didn't the NCBA partner with these folks on several issues lately? How come the "You partnered with X" crowd doesn't say anything about this?

NCBA pretty much goes along with anything the USDA or AMI feels like, from what I have observed.

I guess the NCBA slogan is:IF YOU CAN'T BEAT 'EM, JOIN 'EM!

If I remember correctly it was about the time that the packers were wanting to open the border to Canadian beef.

AMI Says Beef Prices Skyrocketing -- According to analysis by USDA's Economic Research Service, consumers are seeing the largest increase in beef prices since the 1970's. Due to the increase in price, American Meat Institute spokesperson Janet Riley says low-income Americans are turning away from beef. Riley says the embargo on Canadian beef and litigation to maintain the border closure are behind the trend toward higher prices. "It's time for these producers to stop focusing on their growing bank accounts and start focusing on the mothers and children that are struggling to afford beef." The AMI represents the meat packing industry and says beef prices will continue to rise if the United States doesn't resume live cattle trade with Canada.

I believe this one came from CattleNetwork-- I picked it back off the ranchers.net posting of April 11, 2005.....It was in and on many of the publications back then...

That was the time period of the two famous Jan quotes- both involving Canada....This one and Jan Lyons going on TV to plea to keep more members from leaving because of NCBA's Canadian policy and say "We weren't listening to our membership."

OT, Do you know what she was wearing when she made this statement?

What city/town was it made in? What time of day did she make this statement?

I'm sure some would be interested to know.

Yep- I thought Janets "save the starving children" comment had hit almost every Ag publication, email news, coffee shop and barroom in rural America....I know it sure torked off a lot of people in my area--and especially with NCBA's tied at the hip blind support of everything AMI says or does, caused NCBA to lose a lot of credibility and standing with more folks......

Then you shouldn't have any problems naming publications that carried this quote. Just one will do.
