I don't know that people that calve later do it out of laziness :? We always calved Jan-Feb.We don't have alot of building to put cow-calf in,were freezing calves ears, scours were rampant, calving in -40 is NOT fun! We now calve March-April,last three years we've been at 100%.No frozen ears ,no scours.Ma mas and babies do way better.Don't do night checks anymore, don't need too.Like was said before whatever works best for your outfit....like Greg said he was a Kit follower and didn't know it..lol

Sure has been tough, calving in this 70 degree weather the last few days  :P Had to worry about cows getting hit by lightning last night

Denny I think we could find lazy people that calve anytime of the year. That's not what I am saying done right any system could work. Just because some choose to do it a different time or a different way doesn't mean it's wrong.
I know of guys that feed lots of straw and cows look terrible but are they doing things right because they calve early? I don't think so.
Like BRG I also winter all my calves. If I was wanting to get out of work would I keep them? I am trying to add value and hit a different market then the majority of calves in our area. Does it work? Some times.

LOL O.T thing is that could happen to calves that are born in Jan.Our thunder and hail storm didn't last long and had two babies born during the storm, they're up and running around this morning!

My opinion is this real ranchers take care of their cattle no matter what time of year. It's the wannabes that are starving their cattle, not fencing, and just being lazy. There :-) that's my two cents worth.

Hell, I myself LOVE you early calvers...what, even with 'global warming' radically changing the severity of the last few winters we've all experienced, if it was'nt for outfits that calve early, I would'nt have had the oppurtunities to have learned all I could, through all of the night-calving jobs I've been hired for over the years...

...sure I may have developed a festering dislike for 'babying' cattle over the past few years (deep down, you all know who you are) but when push comes to shove...when you have a need for someone to 'hover' over them, I'm THERE ! ! !
