Always interesting taking your opens or lates or olds down to the sale barn and seeing what you get,, Was hoping to take the 24 old, nutty and strange down to the barn today but they told me to wait a couple weeks as the faerms that would be buying are still in the fields and I might cost myself a couple hundred a head if I get unlucky.. So I loaded up 9 opens and my favorite bull who lasted all of 2 days breeding this year before he broke his... uhm.. Unit... Found out my eights were just about what I thought they were on the oldest 6 I brought in averageing about 1400 pounds and than I had one giant that I was guessing was big but in not so grat flesh she still was 1610 pounds... I would hate to see her all fattened up..

ran a small framed 2.5 year old Angus too that came out of a a ranch in Wyoming.. Was stunned to see that she weighed 1110 pounds.. She was carrying good flesh but she was so much shorter than the other girls that I figured she would have topped at 1000 pounds... I really, really need to get my scale at home working again.

Oh.. Average price on the cows came in at 55.17 with a low price of 51.50 and a high of 61.50 on the giant cow (1/2 Maine 1/4 Angus 1/4 Simmi or Elephant, I am not sure).

Bull only brought 57 which is down about 5 from last year... Cull cow prices are up a bit from last year..Maybe 5 cents a pound...

Hmmm, interesting that cull cattle are up and OT's in Bull claiming calf prices are down and time to close the border again, makes one wonder where R-Calfs heads really are

Oh.. calves are WAY down from just a month ago... Number of reasons, futures slipping, corn/grain complex going up, demand slipping... Corn rockets to levels that it hit in summer of 96 I fear what the calf market will do. 5 dollar corn is not condusive to even dollar calves. Maybe I should Plow up some pasture and plant some corn... Nope, not going to happen

I don't know why culls went so well........ I mean when you see an open 5 year old cow bring 990 bucks that isn't much less than what a bred one brought last year.. Maybe 250 bucks less... Makes me wish I didn't keep the other 10 opens that we are working on for practice AIing this winter.. November 6th i get to ship the breds... That should be a nice check.

Same kind of thing here, calves were up a month ago but when cattle start getting pulled off pasture,an influx of calves happen and prices often go down.Don't really think it has a darn thing to do with the border

Oh, this has been beyond a seasonal dip this year but you are right, always a bit of a seasonal one as the calf supply goes up. At least in my very short experience.. Shoulda contracted them this summer.. Just didn't like my age range to do the job right.

We sold some culls in early Sept. One open 1610 lb @ 33.25 (nothing like a summer of good pasture with no calf to pack on the pounds) , one cranky one 1485 lb @ 34.25 and one elderly one 1470 lb @ 30.25. Whoopee... averaged $496.00.

The really sad part is that these prices are looking really good compared to the past three years. In fact, the open cow brought $535.00, and she had cost us about $500 at a bred cow sale last winter.

Just goes to show you not all bred cow sales have bred cows in them. The breeding dates were supposed to be within two months of each other, and lasted six months for those particular cows, and this one was open! We won't be going back there again.

If you do it soon enough, you can complain to the sale management and get a refund on open "bred cows".

If you bought a lot and it was some time ago, it gets tougher unless you have a good relationship with the management.

At least you got $35 to her feed Kato.

I remember being at a bred cow sale last winter and they had sold about 50 bred cows when they realized they should have been sold as opens......... Lets just say the sale went a lot longer after that boo boo.
