can't believe the coaches sent more kids out. should be banned for life. i hated it when my boys quit hockey but after a year i thought it was a really good thing. we had 12 years of minor hockey and 10 of figure skating. the good thing about the skating is you can fire the coach!

Hockey brawl between 8-year-olds stuns police
By CP

GUELPH, Ont. -- Six hockey players and two coaches were suspended following a brawl between two teams of eight-year-olds in Guelph last week that has stunned police.

Three players each from the Duffield Devils and Niagara Falls Thunder novice triple-A teams, and their respective coaches, were ejected from the Guelph Power Play Tournament on Friday after a brawl during a game.

"These are eight-year-olds," said Staff Sgt. Neal Young of Guelph Police.

"How ridiculous is that?"

Guelph Police are reviewing videotape of the incident and criminal charges might be laid, Young said.

Police were called to the arena shortly before 6 p.m. Friday. A small fight had broken out between players on the ice and both coaches sent more players from the bench to join in the fracas, Young said.

A member of the Niagara Falls coaching staff approached the Duffield bench and allegedly spit in the face of a Duffield coach, he said.

Police seized video footage from parents who were recording the game and will review it.

Power Play tournament chairman Jeff Hiller was hesitant to discuss the incident.

"We're not commenting on it at this time," he said Saturday.

"There is an ongoing investigation."

While several players and their coaches were suspended, organizers did not feel it was appropriate to eject the teams from the tournament, Hiller said.

The rest of the Duffield team continued in the tournament, with team president Frank Carbone stepping in as coach.

The Niagara Falls team voluntarily withdrew from the tournament and went home early, he said.

When they watch the Pros do it, then why not them?

Some of the folks on here were critical of me for saying it would happen, but it's happening in the young kids football leagues down here as well.

The Pros have to set examples. Until you do that, it will only get worse.

or when parents realize the sports are supposed to be for personal development and not the fantasy of a pro career.

Not to be combative, but I think that is one of the things that drives kids to play sports to start with, that is, dreaming of being in the Big Leagues.

But you are so right about the parents aspirations for the kids..........

:? I watched that on Canada am this morning....they're 8 year olds, they're not even involved with hit hockey yet.The coaches deserved to be suspended :!:

If they watch Pro Hockey on TV, they are involved with "Hit" hockey, like it or not.
Mike....they're boys,I have five little great nephews[7&8 yrs old} that can't look at each other sideways without wrestling each other to the ground, the problam here was the coaches not keeping control and even encouraging the the little guys to fight.

I know how little boys are. I WAS one.

It takes the idiots in charge to have something like this happen. For 2 novice players to get into a fight is rare. where were the refs? grab one in each hand and put then in their respective box and it is over. But coaches sending out the rest of the bench  . It has very little to do with watching the pros there are more brawls in baseball, basketball, and football than hockey. I think this has more to do with an idiot coach that is working on a big league career of his own, maybe even a anger management problem. Where can i see the footage then i can better understand what happened.

I watched the footage on Canada am this morn,I think you've missed that but look up the canada am web,it will prob be on there. Actually all I seen was the bench clearing part.

Your right about the refs, only prob with that is at that age most of the refs are in thier first year of reffing and the coaches have been known to intimidate a new ref

Hartnell hit knocks Bruins' Alberts out of game
PHILADELPHIA (ESPN.com news services) -- It was the first meeting between the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers since Randy Jones' hit on Patrice Bergeron.

And while the Bruins said they chose to take the high road, that didn't stop the game from getting a little ugly.

There were no incidents involving Jones, but Philadelphia's Scott Hartnell was given a 5-minute boarding penalty and a game misconduct for hitting defenseman Andrew Alberts at 14:22 of the second period. Andrews left the game with an unspecified head injury and will be evaluated on Tuesday.

Boston's Zdeno Chara said that his team decided not to retaliate after Alberts was injured.

"It's something we talked about," Chara said. "We probably ended up with some bruises, but we have two points and that's the most important thing right now. It's up to the league to address things like that."

Hartnell said that the hit on Alberts was not deliberate.

"I did not try to hurt him," Hartnell explained. "There was no intent at all. I am not that type of player. If you look at all the games this year and past years, I finish my checks every time I have an opportunity."

The game was the first between the two teams since Philadelphia's Randy Jones was suspended for two games after checking the Bruins' Patrice Bergeron hard into the boards during the Flyers' 2-1 win at Boston on Oct. 27. Bergeron remains on injured reserve with a severe concussion.

Murray said the Bruins had no intention of retaliating even before the game began.

"It's unfortunate it happened and obviously we don't have Bergy back," Murray said. "But we were focused on making sure we came back after our loss on the Island and getting two points because there's a lot of teams winning and we don't want to get behind the eight ball and we want to keep climbing in the standings."

The coaches were idiots and should get a lifetime ban but I'm sure Mike the dirt dredger will use it to colour the world's greatest sport as dark as he can. You have the NBA and NFL to cut and paste from if you want to cut and paste about gangsters-let us Canadians worry about 'OUR' sport. i don't paste football incidents or basketball because I never played either at a competitive level-on the whole amateur kids sports do infinitely more good then harm-unless you live for scandal. all the blame for this last deal rests with the coaches-you learn how to deal with bad reffing pretty quick. i've just sent my kids to the dressing room when there's an incident brewing. The captains come out and shake hands and things are settled-this is at alot higher level hockey than major novice. as for the parents-our rink has a zero tolerance for abuse of players, officials and other spectators-it works well and trust me there are no more passionate hockey fans than in my hometown.
