Another of him. Don't have to have a big cow for a big calf.

Nice herefords!!!
Your grass looks good and still has some green to it.

But what caught my eye the most was that great looking
sorrell horse your daughter is riding. Tell us more about
him/her. What a hip he/she has!! I'm impressed with him.

Ranching is a lot of fun when you have helpers like you do.
I sure miss ours...

Nice shots. What drives the decision between bull and steer?

Down here, virtually all males grow up to be bulls.

At this stage of the game, first of all, the cow has to pass my standards of trouble free status. Calve on her own, take care of it on her own, sound udder, sound feet and legs, and she has to have bred back and maintained her flesh under my management system. The calf has to have an acceptable birthweight and have an acceptable weaning weight and have good conformation and overall has to have the look of being able to develope into a good range bull.

I will continue to feed them and watch as they grow out and cull anything that doesn't keep up with the rest of the herd. We will collect performance data, feed conversion data, carcass ultrasound data, scrotal and breeding soundenss exam and cull anything that doesn't measure up.

Usually only about a fourth to a third of the male calves will remain bulls. I believe in culling hard.

was talking to some people from the tour they liked your high feed efficiency bull-do you have a new pic of him.

Of course I do! This is when I pulled him from the heifers and put him with some cows that I had AId. The ultrasound showed he had bred 29 head of heifers and gained weight doing it.

Thanks Faster Horses.

The sorrell horse is a new horse for us. I am not sure of his pedigree. We purchased him from a lady and her husband a couple months ago. They were moving to town after working on a ranch near Miller and wanted a good home for him. The price was right and he has been more than I could have hoped for. He does have a real thick hip with a good handle on him. I had been looking for an upgrade for my eldest daughter. She is 12 and I thought she could use a little more horse than the 34 yr old bay she had been riding so when I came across Cody, we snatched him up pretty fast. He is 14 now and the kids absolutely adore him. So now my youngest gets to ride Bay. She is thrilled to and I enjoy watching them and teaching them how to chase and herd cattle.

We have had a very very good grass year here. Things have dried out here the past month. I still think I have at least 10 to 12 more years of good help yet. Hopefully by then they will have me trained too

Brian,

A great set of photos; the Herefords, the horses and your "ranch hands".

It looks to me that you had a good summer and it is continuing on into the fall.

I have made reservations to go to KC at the end of the month and I hope you can make it too. If so. I will look forward to seeing you there.

Thank you Dave, Its good to hear from you. Apparently your doing well if your going to KC. I am not sure that I will make it. As much as I would like to I am pretty tied up here with a harvest that is getting later by the day.

Is he Css qualified to come north of the medicine line.

Not yet, I will be getting that done in the near future. I haven't promoted him very hard yet. Will have some calves on test this winter and interested in how they do.
