Ok...my brother and his family came up from SE Texas for thanksgiving and they brought dinner too...Mustard Greens...(they were ok), turnips...(didn't like them at all), purple hull peas...(pretty bland)...and gulf shrimp...(now that I loved)...oh ya cornbread...southern style with no sugar in it... :? Plus we had a ham and of course I had to contribute good home grown beef steaks...(so we wouldn't starve..lol) Ya know..I am very thankful for their visit, but I just don't get into their food...lol Now I've had some of Lilly's peach cobbler that melts in your mouth...and some kind of sausage that I can't remember the name that was pretty good...but I think I'll stick to our midwest tastes when it comes to thanksgiving dinner again...lol So what all did you have that was good????

We had Turkey baked in the oven to perfection.........Dressin (can't say it was "southern style" cuz MIL don't put any sage in it) But it was good, Turkey gravy to go on it, and mashed taters. Green beans, Fruit Salad, and dinner rolls. Sis n Law contributed some brocolli and rice cheese casserole, and another kinda fruit salad that had jello and coolwhip in it. I got off fairly easy this year, by contributin the mashed taters, apple pie, coconut pie, chocolate pie, and buttermilk pie.
Somehow or another we managed to not have Pumkin Pie, and that's mine and lil Lilly's favorite.

Oh and cranberry sauce, that almost didnt make it to the table. It was forgot.

All in all it was a wonderful, and delicious meal. It did it's job, cuz we all wanted a nap after it was over with. LOL

(I"ve never had greens for Thanksgivin or purple hull peas, must be a tradition a lil farther east than I am) LOL We do have all those thru out the year, just not at Thanksgivin. I love collard greens, I'll eat mustard greens, but I don't care for turnip greens at all. Purple hull peas????Bland??? did it have a ham hock in it? Ya just about can't beat peas n cornbread.......Your Southern Thanksgivin meal sounds more like our Traditional New Years meal cept the peas hasta be black eyed peas, ham, and greens of some kind...usually cabbage but sometimes collards.

On saturday we (the Mrs and 3 Kids and I) were invited to her dad's side of the family for noon dinner in Lincoln. They do one meal like the saturday after thanksgiving and that covers Thanksgiving and Christmas. Their traditional meal is Duck a oyster dressing, yams and craut and dumplings. My idea of of a good holiday meal includes roast beef, ham and turkey, bread dressing or stovetop stuffing and mashed taters and gravy. Oh and of course pumpkin, cherry, apple and custard pie. Needless to say I nearly starved to death before we got out of there and stopped on the way home and ate supper.... Usually my MIL when it is her turn to host will make a roast and mashed taters for the rest of us outlaws that don't get all fired up for "DUCK, YAMS,and DUMPLINS" (yuck  ). Is it tradition or just foolish loyalty to my habit but I'll take roast any day over foul......

I know why southerners don't like sugar in their cornbread...it's cause they used it all in their tea...lol I've gotta have a little sugar in my cornbread along with butter and honey.... or it's like eating a dry ole box...
