Spayed hfrs

Help Support Ranchers.net:

Because all Heifers were not created equal. :)

Some will make cows but spaying a hfrs makes them able to run with steers on pasture or just gain better by eliminating the cycling.

Masseyman does make a good point stating the possibility of dairy heifers being crossed with beef bulls, with the ultimate intention of producing beef. It would seem like a poorer heifer of a beef breed would be a better choice in raising beef than would a dairy cow.

They raise lots of Holstein steers for beef but do you want to run them on your ranch? I'm not sure if a poor beef breed Hfr would do a better job then a dairy bred raising beef if the poor beef hfr was run in a pasture and the dairy hfr dry lotted like they do with most on that type.

The last few years I've been buying disadvantaged calves in the fall and then running them on grass the next summer and they generally look alot better come sale time but they are always a little smaller than what people want for replacement heifers and definitely not top quality. Spaying would let me run them with steers and not worry about neighbors bulls.
