I plant a few cherry tomato plants because they produce early and often and my kidsreally like them. Celebrity is as good as it gets, but I like roma tomatoes on Mexicn food.

We were away for 5 days (don't like leaving my "babies" during growing season) and came back to lots of green tomatoes (plum, cherry, Rutgers and some others I can't remember), tiny eggplants and squash, cucs ready to pick and tons of sweet snowpeas.
Also, the Japanese Beetles have resurrected themselves and are eating rhubarb leaves, grapes and cherry tree leaves
Pole beans really seem to attract them so this year I've only planted bush beans.
Trying unsuccessfully to convince the catbird not to tangle in the blueberry netting. The kitty took a flying leap toward the blueberries and rebounded from the netting, funny to watch, just like off a trampoline. But he is a slow learner.
Well, rhubarb pie tonight for my father-in-law and we might try Faster Horses' cake/coke recipe if she survived her test baking!

You know what? It is VERY GOOD. YUMMMMY, in fact.
The cake mix I used was Double Pudding and the next time I will try just a basic cake mix. I will make it again~hard to leave out any ingredients for one thing... :wink:

BTW, I found out it is called "Pop and Powder Cake."
On the internet they had Faster Horses' recipe but they added two egg whites "to hold it together better" (if that is needed) and listed below were suggested flavors that go well with different mixes. I'll give one a whirl for the 4th plus a blueberry pie for necessary calories to sustain life! Thank you for the idea, FH.

Easy Cake Recips
(Serving Size : 12 at 190 calories)
18 1/4 ounces cake mix -- any flavor(1 box)
10 ounces diet soda -- any flavor
2 egg whites -- slightly beaten, optional but cake
stays together better and is fluffier
Mix the dry cake mix, the diet soda, and the egg whites
until well blended. Pour into a 9 X 13 sprayed pan or
prepared cupcake tins. Bake according to the directions
on cake mix box.
(0 g Dietary Fiber; 190 calories; 5 g Fat; 35 g Carb.)
Serving Ideas : Diet Soda Cake Combinations:
orange cake /diet Mountain Dew
cherry chip cake / A& W diet Cream soda
diet lemon + lemon;

That is interesting. Thanks for posting what you found. I used a Devil's Food cake mix with Diet Coke. It is pretty chewy, but that 's the way my husband likes it. I think I will try the egg whites next time. And I wondered about using Diet Cherry Coke. I bet that is really good.
Well, anyway, what fun!!
Here is a really,really good salad I found.
2 c. cooked chicken, turkey or shrimp
1 T. onion
1 t. salt (I didn't use any)
1 c. grapes (I halved them)
1 c. diced celery
1 c. cooked macaroni rings (I used more)
1 c. mandarian oranges
1 c. mayonnaise
1/2 c. slivered almonds
1 c. cream, whipped
Mix all together except whipped cream. Chill for at least 2
hours, then add the cream.

nr and faster horses----mmmmmmmmm your recipes are just in time for me to try out for our 4th of july celebration at our place...gonna have a few friends and some family here and lots of beer, ribs, burgers and fireworks!!! definitely gonna give the cake and that yummy salad a try!!! thanks!! :wink:

Want an excellent bug killer recipe? Get some chewing tobacco that comes in the little individual pouches (I'm fairly sure it's Skoal Bandits). Put two or three of them in hot water and let it steep until the water is a really nasty brown color. Mix the concentrate with water at , (can't exactly remember the next part), I think the rate is 1 or 2 ounces per quart in a spray bottle. The nicotine from the tobacco is a contact killer. If you don't get good results the first time, play with the mixing part. Also, if any of you have problems with slugs in your gardens, get a shallow dish (I used cat food cans) and fill them about 1/2-3/4's full of the cheapest beer you can find. The beer draws the slugs, they crawl in, can't get out and drown. Works really well!

I was reading an old new england newspaper from mid 1800's and was surprised they new the nicotine trick back then but if I recall they suggested using it in a dried form on certain crops. Certainly not Skol!

Jeanie, I wasn't trying to contradict you or anything. Just thought it was interesting how far back in history that insect control idea went and meant as sort of a joke they wouldn't have used Skoal for their farms. Doubt Skoal was even a brand name mid-1800s.
If I could stand the idea of finding ashtrays and soaking used butts for nicotine I'd try it myself. The Japanese Beetles are everywhere feasting.

Did you know that the ancient Inca's used to plant marigolds around their gardens to keep the bugs out? It truly is fascinating how far back insect control and different things exist. The skoal bandits come in handy, as you don't have to scrounge up butts and you don't have to deal with the smell. :wink: I have also used the Japanese Beetle traps, and they work pretty good! I hope the rest of your season goes great! Thanks!
