Spring-Fed Water Troughs

I am trying to fix an old trough on our ranch that was originally spring-fed. It was built by my great-grandfather almost 80 years ago. The spring is still very active but the old pipe that once connected the water to the concrete trough has rusted out and been damaged by the cattle gathering to eat the lush water grass. The old pipe comes right out of the ground where the spring "eye" was but rather than disturb that area any more than the cows already have, I would like to collect it downhill a few yards. If anyone has any experience with these old spring-fed type troughs, I would love some advice on different methods!
Thanks!

My house is on a spring, and I fixed one same system back on the forest a couple years ago.
That one I dug up the seep line and put down fabric and new drain rock the a new seep line into a spring box, this one was a culvert set on end the bottom had been filled with concrete. Top had some lumber cut to fit the seep line comes into the box higher then the out flow to the tank then there is an overflow pipe above that. You should have a spring, and box fenced off, will save a lot of work.

We develope water that way a lot. We have used perforated pipe in a shallow trench when we are a long ways from the road to collect a spring. Or culvert if the situation allows. We try to get as close to where the water surfaces as possible. Then after a collection box is installed we pipe the water to the trough location and put in the trough. We always fence off the spring and collection box area to keep cattle off the pipe and from muckin' up the place. We use gravel on the perfoated pipe to bed it and cover it or rocks if we are in the boonies. It is amazing how a trough of clean cool water at a little seep gets the cattle out'a the bottom and using the ridges.
