Spring Weather

Ya gotta love spring don't ya? :D We had temps in the mid 70's last week and things had dried up to where you could get some work done without sinking. We even got our little bunch of cows out on grass and out of the stackyard. This morning we woke up to 4 inches of snow covering the ground. Our entire valley got blanketed. Now don't ever think that I will ever cuss moisture in any form it decides to fall in, but its does make it an adventure digging postholes for the shed and corral I was working on. :D What a winter/spring it has been for us. 211% of normal for snowpack and 198% for total moisture. And it just keeps coming! When I go check my cows I will pack my camera and try to post some pics.

On another note, I surely hope the folks in Kansas, OK, Texas and Colorado can get moisture as needed to help with the aftermath of the fires. Wish we could share ours with them.

Snow on the sage. And salt brush and rabbit brush. I would sure like to buy this piece of ground. I would promptly get rid of the rabbit brush and plant more grass. There are a couple of spots that have a high water table and would do well planted in meadow foxtail.


The Sheeprock mnts look absolutely magnificent wearing a spring evening gown of white!


My cows were up on the west hill chasing green grass.


A few "soo hoo's" from me and they came on a trot. There didn't need to be fed but I have plenty of hay and they can chew a little hay til the snow melts. Its now 38 up from a low of 16F last night. The snow will fade quick.


This little creek has been dry for over 5 years during our drought. I had to haul water to use this pasture for each of those years. I aint hauling water this year!!! :D

Glad things are shaping up for a good year for you; happy you won't have to haul water. We never had to do that, but know ranchers that did. As for feeding them, you never go wrong feeding cattle. If you set an old round bale of hay out for them just to pick at every day, you'll be amazed at how satisfied they seem. They won't eat it like they do in the winter, but soon it will disappear. Cattle 'chase grass' not so much as chasing dry matter and the old bale of hay or straw provides dry matter.

Winter storm warning for our area til tomorrow. Hope it doesn't last long. Lots of calves and lambs on the ground.
I remember some terrific winter storms in April. We don't need any of those.
 
We have 8 inches of spring since dark and still coming down. 7 calves since dark so not quite a calf to the inch. Glad for big umbrella spruce and our bit of barn space tonight.

Similar story here as far as the snow goes. Fortunately the only calf born since this started was under a roof. We only have 2 dozen left to calve so hopefully they don't get in a hurry. It's how the calves handle the next week that makes me nervous.
