I had about 80 pairs 18 miles from home that I hadn't weaned yet. I purchased Quiet Wean nose flaps so today we ran the calves through to get a shot of Blackleg HS and Vista Once and installed the flaps. The corral is kind of a flimsy deal but works pretty slick. My daughter and I gathered the cows and I pealed the cows off with my horse and Britt put them out the gate and penned the calves as I brought them to her. The cattle worked nice and quietly. We have a old Powder River alley leading to a Ranger chute made in Britt, Iowa(Not why we called our daughter Britt) that is 2 years younger then I am. It got semi retired when I purchased a Stampede Steel hydraulic chute about 12 years ago but it still works good and I kind of enjoyed running it again today.Britt likes our tub system better them our make shift Bud box but it did work pretty fair.
I know the vaccine should have been given at least 2 weeks before weaning but I am hoping the stress will be reduced on these calves and when we haul them home on Friday they will settle in and go to eating.
I will keep you updated on how many flaps are lost and the general well being of the calves. :D

And here I thought when you said you started your experiment today, it really meant that you were going into the goat bidness with leanin' H!

My bad..........

That'll be next, along with joining a Save The Wolves group.   :P

Hope it works out BMr

We did the same thing last Wednesday. We put them in 160 calves. One real little calf lost his within site of the chute, and I found 2 in the creep feeder today. Overall I am impressed with them so far. We'll see on Thursday when we pull the calves from the cows.

So your leaving yours 8 days?

I was thinking pulling ours Friday or Saturday but the weather is to get cold and snowy and I think I might have a funeral on Friday and Saturday so was thinking of hauling home on Thursday. Might not be quite long enough but wanted to get them out of their noses before it got very cold. :?

A friend of mine uses those things but he says 4 days is about as long as you want to leave them in. He said they left them longer one year and the calves noses got rubbed awful raw, enough so that they thought of treating a couple of them for infection. I bought some to use this year, but never got a chance to get them in before I moved them home and weaned them.

Keep us up to date as I have a bag to use next year.

We put one in a young cow that was sucking other young cows. It's been in since April, and I don't care if it is cold on her poor little nose. The plan seems to be working for that which was intended. She has two options--wear the cold plastic suck-inhibitor, or become a Big-Mac.

i left mine in for 8 days and not a one had a sore nose,i put them in my uncles calves on last sat morning and we are gonna take them out this sunday afternoon, the biggest thing is not to crowd them after putting them in,they will catch on each other and they will come out

A brass bull works when you have an animal that does not want to stay weaned. My 6 year daughter refers to cows with ring as cows that have jewelry. :D :D

Well we pulled them on day 8 and no sore noses. It seemed like the calves were still plenty noisy the first 2 days, but i think I came to the conclusion that they only bellared when I was around. We don't live where the calves are so I'm not sure, but anytime we drove up to them they were plumb quiet until they saw us then they would start complaining. Three days after we removed them the calves are plumb quiet. Not sure if we'll do it next year, but it's not a definite no. What have others noticed who have used them?

We didn't get to give them a fair chance this year as we had bad weather coming in and decide to bring them all home to shelter. Since we had the calves sorted off for the second time we just weaned them after just 2 days of wearing the flaps. Maybe next year. :-)
