I took my new pup to the goats today-- WOW
she keeps going like she started and she might just be the best dog I've ever had .

She went right to it like an old dog- cool and calculating- all business
Even had an old bitty go up on the hind legs trying to intimidate her- She just stood her ground waited for it to come down and then bit her clean on the nose- stood there and waited for her to turn then went right back to work.

And this from an over the top wriggle pup-- I was expecting crazy mayhem.

Color me tickeled pink :)

what breed of pup is it?I have several border collies and most of them do start like their all business.Sounds like you have a good start to a good pup.

Good to hear. Can't remember, how old is the pup. I was impressed with your dogs when I saw them work. Paul

Shes 7 months (the white factored one).
I don't usually start them that young but shes been driving me CRAZY this last month.
I thought starting her might settle her down some .
It seems to have worked(at least for today)- shes been real calm all evening.

I'm still gonna wait on the male littermate.

I am getting ready to start back up with the horse--- feel free to invite yourself over to ride with me. He'll probably be nuts for awhile and the company (to pick me up off the ground) might be useful :)
Bring a dog and we'll put it on the goats for some fun too.

I sold my backup dog and picked up an older female to replace him-- the way things are going this pup might end up going to work before she does :(
I think that She got real screwed up by the person who tried starting her-- not sure if I can get her over it. Real shame she's got the right instincts .

Nice to hear about your pup. It's always a good feeling when they make you proud. My BC Jack is 2 and I have let him develop his instincts rather then really try to train him. He has a pretty good there and down but other then that he just watches what need to be done. Most of the time. This morning my daughter and I were taking 300 calves out to graze about a 1/2 mile down the fence. Jack and I brought the calves out of the corral/ feedlot and my daughter came behind while I opened the gate and rode to the front to make sure they made it in the gate. the calves started to run so Jack went in and stopped them we waited until the back end caught up then he came back and watched the side with me. First trip out for the calves. Daughter and dog brought them in alone tonight as I was away.

I'm afraid people are looseing sight of the fact that these dogs a BRED to have the right instincts and just need time and some structure for them to develop.
When they try and make the dog be what they want right now they are fighting with the instincts and the dog has two choices-- Give up control or mentally quit trying. Neither choice makes the most out of the dog.

Read somewhere about BC breeder said to see if pups have right instencts, they put it in a room with 15/20 empty soda bottles scattered about..when they come back, and the bottles are all herded together, they have a keeper......this true??

update- Female is still looking good

I started the littermate- hes even better :)
- hes so far not the least bit worried about getting kicked- so he keeps going high and sliding into the bite-he better smarten up fast or hes gonna get hurt.
But he has a beautiful soft bite then let em move on.
He seems so far to be a heel dog(female is a head dog)- which is great cause I haven't got a good one of those.
