State-Inspected Meat Measure Introduced
U.S. Rep. Roy Blunt (R-MO) has introduced the "New Markets for State-Inspected Meat and Poultry Act of 2006," which would allow interstate shipment of state-inspected meat and poultry. In his introduction, Blunt said, "There are 2,000 state-inspected meat processors -- 31 of them in Missouri -- that are prevented from competing in the national marketplaces. Yet, 30 foreign meat-producing countries can sell their meats freely across the nation. Our locally produced, state-inspected meats are just as safe. In fairness, this measure will promote the local livestock sector of ag without compromising food safety that consumers demand."

There are 28 state-run inspection programs. USDA would have to verify the programs are equal to the federal-inspection system for federally inspected plants. This issue has been debated by Congress since the early 1980s.

This issue is almost a no-brainer...

Wish they would... I have some potential customers out of state that would love to have the system tweaked a little. The difference in inspecton levlesare so silly it isn't even funny between USDA and state... If I remember correctly a USDA inspected plant has to have a bathroom especially for the inspectors. Its been a while since I checked on that though.

Il Rancher, check your regs, they might allow the producer of the beef to ship it interstate.

In Canada we have the same deal where provincial plants can't sell out of province, but the producer can have it processed there and sell it out of province.

IT is a strangley written reg Jason, it really is. I can only sell it in state... What does that mean? Does it mean I can take the cash in state and than ship to another state or does it mean they have to pick it up in state. It isn't a huge deal as most of our customers are from the Chicago area... When you have a metro area that size 2 hours away you have a GREAT opportunity for direct marketing of beef as long as it is different than straight commidity beef (IE organic or at least natural, grass fed vs grain fed, pasture raised vs confinement fed, what have you)..

We are close enough to Iowa that it would be nice to sell into that market a little bit more but wiht more convienance for the customer..

Than you get health code which is county by county and state wide and changes even from municipal to municipal... Fun, lol. We only sell wholes and halves so that makes it simpilier.. IF nthis rule goes into affect I would feel better about switching over to single cut and boxed beef packages for customers...

Meat must have a USDA approved label on it to cross state line for resale.

Often the state inspector and USDA inspector are the same person.

I'm not totally sure, but I think most of the difference has to do with paper work and record keeping...the relative safety of the meat is the same...has to be, doesn't it???????

Having a spouse who served on the SD Animal Industry Board just a few years ago, I recall that state inspections have to equal or exceed federal rules.

Ironically, it was the SMALL Federal Inspected plants that were fighting against interstate sales of state inspected meat when cattle org's worked to get it passed a few years ago!!!! Maybe we will get it done this time.

Please explain why the small USDA plants were against it.

IL rancher you can sell it instate and they can have it shipped to themselves or pick it up in your state, but they can't use it for resale or restraunt use.
The state inspector told our local locker that he could set up a satelite store in MN and sell meat there, and it is only state inspected.

They didn't tell me! My guess is fear of competition, but doubt that was admitted to. And I have no idea which states or which companies were involved as our Congressmen really don't have to divulge who has talked to them if they are not big contributors, do they?

And an unsubstantuated rumor from a Congressman, no less  - most of which rank up there with OJ simpson, Ken Lay, and Bill " I did not have sex with that woman" Clinton for knowing what the truth is

You vicious jerks really should spend a little time doing something more constructive or instructive than attacking my character!

Since when have you, OT, backed with facts any rumor or innuendo you posted?

Why am I not allowed to relate anecdotal information regarding activity of which I had personal, first hand and second-hand knowledge? Attending some of the open meetings of the Animal Industry Board and their national/international counterpart was a privilege for me because I could help with the driving, and I also learned more about our industry from them. You should try it sometime!

I apparently did not make myself clear enough for conspiracy groupies re. the answer to you RM. My intent was to show that, just as when I talk to my Congressmen and they are able to vote right on my issues, it darn sure isn't because I'm a large contributor to their campaigns, just as I expect it works for SMALL packers who happen to be Federally inspected.

Some of you have posted previously that large packers get their wishes because of big contributions. Maybe I should ask that you verify that claim. Not because I have any particular love of them as has also been falsely claimed (shouldn't we properly reserve 'love' for family and friends, not corporate entities?) but because such claims SHOULD be verified when they imply wrongdoing or outright criminal acts.

Re. "unsubstantiated rumors".....I don't really want to bring myself down to your level, OT, no, it was not rumor, it was fact, though I only heard it spoken and read it in ag media at the time and did not personally document it. Maybe others did. I neither know, nor care.

You need to chill a little there Maxine- Don't go stroking on us-maybe a valium and a stiff belt would help....

I'm calling you on it, MRJ. Have you read the OIG report yet? If people don't speak out about the evils of the world, they will take over. You are sure doing your part in remaining silent while this goes on.

There are a multitude of "evils" in this world. Are you sure the OIG report details anything like the worst of them? What are you doing to solve the problems you claim are "exposed" in the report........other than to call me names, that is?

Maybe someone will gift me with a computer system and hook-up that will allow me to find something like that report in less than several hours at the computer, and I will read it. Or get a housekeeper/cook/family caretaker so I have that time available for computer research.

I gave you the link. It took me less than a minute to google it. See no evil, MRJ, see no evil.

Its just plain tribalism. People are leaving your tribe, MRJ. There are reasons for it.
