Stretching a Palm Leaf

Bought me a new Atwood Palm leaf hat and it's a little tight. Besides sending it back for a bigger one is there a way to stretch it just a little to fit better?

Atwood's are woven tighter than Sunbody's but I would soak in really good and put a hat stretcher in it until it dries. If it is only off a little just wear it till it dries. If you use a hat stretcher only stretch a little bit at a time until it fits good. If you stretch it too much you may never get it shrunk to fit again.

I would like to find a toyo straw (I think) hat that's vented like the old time ones. Havn't been able to .

I don't know rickey tickey but woven vent is preferable.
I don't know that I'm looking for toyo anyway. I would imagine what ever your dad or soaps dad wore 40 years ago is what I want.

Here we go, last straw cowboy hat as you scroll down. Lighter color and bigger sized. Color is just preference but they are cooler.

Good point Gcreek. Can't hurt me none. Here's one I like better but it's too high to work in.

Like that one, it reminds me of my teenage days. :D I could be as tall as Miocene in that one.

I have a hard time paying much for a hat when I am going to abuse the heck out of it and I can get a cap for free from a feed company or the like. Last ones I bought cost under $25 and last a couple of years and take a fair amount of abuse.

I was always told to never hire a man that wore a straw hat, had leather shoe strings, or rolled his own smokes. The guy with the straw hat was always chasing it down. The guy with the leather shoe strings was always tying his shoes, and the guy that rolled his own was always busy building a smoke. :) :)

palm are too heavy, rather wear a felt, and if it a straw a panama

Agreed. I used to wear Atwoods for over 10 years, but they are HEAVY, just like jodywy says. Now the only straw I'll wear is an American. Lighter, much cooler, better sweatbands, come in long ovals for a better fit, and almost as tough as a palm leaf. Cavenders and nrsworld run some price breaks on them every so often...just have to keep checking their sites.

You have to figure a good straw will set you back around C note these days. Before you say NO WAY, remember, a C note used to buy you 5 tanks of gas in your pickup, or 5 good straw hats. Nowadays, you are lucky if you can fill up one time or buy one good straw for the same $100.
