had a bit of a suprise last night. still a month from calving and one old gal decided to go ahead. ( the calf had the sack over it's nose, so it was dead ) The calf had a leg back and I tried to fix it right out in the lot, well the cow decided the safeest place was in the pond! so the wife swam out and spooked her out, and we ran her along the fence.5 feet from the gate she decides the pond is a better place to be. this time the kid swims out to get her. back along the fence, and back to the pond! Twice, I got the 4 wheeler right into her and she pert near rolled me over on it!
So plan "B" was to get her out and rope her, then hog tie her. worked ok, I got her back feet, and the wife held her as I got the calf out.
best part was I knew the calf was dead, plus it was under water for 15 minutes while the cow was in the pond, and as I was using the other end of the rope to wrap around the calf to pull, my wife says " careful, you might kill it" :???:
\
even though it was bad luck, it made me feel good to know the calving season for me is here!
