so do those couple herd-marker cows go back to Lucy's boy?

The two photos are of the same cow. I have no idea of her pedigree, but back in the '60's, my dad bought some black Angus heifer calves to hopefully make ranching easier. The ranch where he bought these nice heifers had used Angus bulls for many years, but the cow herd did originate way far back from Holstein and Shorthorn stock. That roan hind leg could probably be traced back to one of those heifer calves many generations ago. This herd-marker cow has always raised a good calf.

is that red looking grass little blue stem?

Yes.

sorry - I didn't intend to come off that way. I did an AI job for a big ranch in montana about 10 years ago and he had been AIing to lucy's boy and I saw a lot of the same in those calves. The other marker cow I was referring to was the holstein looking cow in the middle of the first picture. I realize I just did it again... but I just find that kind of thing interesting.

The black cow with the white crest on her neck is out of a black-white-faced cow and a black bull. That cow came out a bit "louder colored" than most, so she was given to my youngest son on the year that he turned eight years old. That is the age I was when I got my first heifer calf, and that is also the age that my grandfather presented his son (my dad) with his first heifer calf. Anyway, it has always been easy for the Kosmo Kid to find the first cow that he owned.

Pretty sunrise "Red sky in the morning you best heed warning" so did the weather change or the old wives tail did'nt come true??
When I was about 11 we were going for thanksgiving and the sky looked like that the weather really turned bad by afternoon.

Cow's look to be in good condition.Cowboy's too.

The sunrise picture was actually from the day before, but it was prettier than the grey dawn of Sunday. The red sky brought in the cloudiness, but we didn't seem to get much wind out of the deal. It's really been fairly nice for this time of year, and as I am typing this post this morning the temperature stands at 27 degrees above zero. Not bad for Nebraska in January. :-)

It has always been said: "The best insurance is a fat cow going into the winter." Hope the same applies to us cowboys. :-)

Of course, much of that "condition" perception by looking at the picture is actually extra layers of clothing to ward off the chill of a winter morning. :-)

I thought maybe that sunrise was from the day before, cause I too got some cool pictures of the colorful sky...

enjoyed the pictures, especially the sunrise ones Soapweed and Jassy. My Dad gave my brothers and I a heifer calf when we were 8 years old as well--must be a good 'ol Nebraska tradition.
