I was thinking about your swamp grass today while I was hauling in some small squares of fescue straw. I wonder if you could anhydrogenate it? They do some sorry fescue hay and it supposedly is very paletable and cheap. Here's a link. I have no personal experience but I can give you some numbers of men that do it.

Around here we look at rush and swamp bales as better eating then snow.
The cows eat it better when ran through the bale processor.
It also works really good for bedding down calving cows when a bad snow storm is on the way.
Years ago a neighbor of ours sprayed his rush bales with something not sure what covered them with plastic. When he fed them out the ole girls licked it up like candy. I'll try and find out what it was.
