Cattle Alert: Taiwan Re-Imposes Ban On US Beef Imports
TAIPEI (AP)--Taiwan on Saturday re-imposed a ban on imports of U.S. beef after tests confirmed that an American animal was infected with mad cow disease, an official said.
The Taiwanese action came two months after the island of 23 million people removed a ban it had imposed in February 2004 following the discovery of the disease in a Washington state heifer.
On Friday the U.S. Department of Agriculture said it had confirmed mad cow disease in an animal apparently born in the United States.
Chen Lu-hung of the Heath Department's Food Control Section said the ban would take effect immediately.
"The Cabinet office made this decision today," Chen said.
