It started to rain about 6:30 last night and never quite. At times it was raining very hard and then it would let up and then go back at it again. The lightning was pretty wicked as well. The Bismarck area got anywhere from 3 to 7 inches of rain, and they tell us to expect more heavy rains today and tonight.

Since last Wednesday we have had 4.2" of rain. On Sunday we had another severe storm go through that dumped 1.8" in less than half an hour. After years of watching the grass dry up and die in May and June this has been a welcome change. I could do without all of the tornadoes though, they tend to keep you on your toes.

I love it. I think nearly everyone in the ND, SD, NE area has gotten pretty good mositure overall. Should be a great grass year!

Are you about done calving RancherFred? We are, only have around 20 cows and 10 heifers left in the summer program. Should be done in a couple weeks, as the bulls were pulled.

Should have been with my kids and I yesterday afternoon around 11:30am in Lavina, MT.
We ended up in a cloud burst. rain was coming down so hard and fast it was just flooding the road and not running off.
Got through Lavina and heading west; driving about 45mph; we ran into the hail.
Son said that we should just pull over. I told him I was going to get us the hell out of there. Got up to 50 mph and got out of the hail. Had 2 other cars following me.
Reason why I didn't want to stop, we had seen some cloud rotation on the south eastern edge of this storm and I wasn't waiting for it to pass.
Didn't know which way it was moving.

OH man....I WISH it would rain. Round bales are now $125....that's IF you can find any to buy. Cattle are going to the auction mart in droves.....NO hay or pasture to speak of.....NOT GOOD!!

We could sure use some rain...it's gettin powerful dry, and the grass is burnin up. It's lookin more n more like one of those years that we hafta pray for hurricane moisture.

My brother wants me to come down again and bring some rain with me...lol he too said it hadn't rained since the wedding and they're awfully dry...

We had 4" last saturday and some of the north pastures got some bad hail too,,,felt bad for the cows that were up there, and it beat down alot of grass in places...not to mention washed out some of our trails...but not complaining...

There is an area in the area of exit 170 on I-90 in western SD that is VERY dry! Still fairly green, but drying fast. Got about .80 in a week of little showers over a week ago, and that is about all since early May. Didn't get much during spring, but cool weather has saved the grass that grew.

Got last calf a few weeks ago, last 35 head branded a few days ago, and moving to summer pastures this week. Bulls to follow in a few weeks.

Maybe put up some yellow clover in a pasture to get a little hay soon as the cows are moved.

I got 5 inches at my house but just 10 miles east of me they reported 10.22. Luckily we are in the type of country that can handle it.

Our grasses up here aren't really drought adapted-tradiotionally were a good rainfall country with explosive May/June growth 20 hours of sunlight helps a bit. We don't have much grass that cures well on the stem-if we rest a pasture all summer till fall you basically have upright straw for fall grazing. I've found it best to rotate through all the fields-top off the growth that's there and if we get a later rain the grass will respond with some fresh growth. Our native meadows will be drying out so the cows can graze furthur out into them.

I just heard some sale barns have quit taking pairs-no orders for them and no where to get the cows killed if they split them. Our only hope for winter feed is if the grain crop freezes and they have to bale it-we sold three loads of cows two years ago-only thing saving our bacon right now.

For people that calve later in spring, what do they do with the calves if they are split from there mother for slaughter?Calves would be pretty small yet.
