Thanksgivin Dinner

That's a really good idea, sw. I always have the biggest steak I can find for Thanksgiving dinner. I let everybody else have the turkey if they want it---the only request I make is that they be sure none of that nasty turkey juice gets on my steak. I don't understand how anybody can eat something that looks like a muscled up buzzard.

   Now i won't be able to look at the turkey Thursday without thinking it is a buzzard! darn! LOL

We really like the fresh uncooked cranberry relish which we grind up and add ground apples, orange plus a little rind, walnuts, celery and sugar then some dissolved Knox gelatin to set it up a little. It tastes so fresh and zingy.

We always have "potato filling" (mashed Idaho potatoes with bread crumbs, onions chopped fine and sauteed in butter, parsley, eggs beaten with milk to make them looser than plain mashed potatoes and then bake it in the oven til it puffs up a bit. Really good with turkey gravy. Then pecan pies are a must.
TTB- I'm with you on the green bean/onion ring casserole. We hadn't had it for years til a friend served it and called it Retro Beans because it took us all back to our growing up years when our moms cooked them. I've made them since and could easily eat the WHOLE batch myself and call it a meal. yum

WHAAAAAATTTT Red Robin, you mean to say you aren't cooking Thanksgiving dinner?

Man works from sun to sun, womans work is never done.
I play a very vital part in our thanksgiving dinner celebration FH. Every worthwile task, like cooking thanksgiving dinner , needs a goal, a target, I provide that. If I like it, she done good.

My wifes family used to do a Turkey and a roast every Thanksgiving but they used to have a small army stop by. Christmas I think they even added a ham or something so everyone could pick what they want... I would have a riot if I suggested to my mother that she should serve beef for Thanksgiving.. She is one who is very much into the "This is the way we have always done it and I am not changing now" type of thing when it comes to holidays.. That and my brother just loves his Turkey.... Can't talk him out of it...

I actually like Turkey a lot but in all honesty, if it was the choice between a big ld slice of prime rib or some turkey breast I don't think I would even have to think once to make that decision...

SW You are reminding me of one of the profs at MSU... Hated chickens with a passion but advocated eating as many eggs as possible because if you ate them as an egg than they couldn't become a chicken.

Well it's all settled. I"m making the gravy for the dressin(sorry but MIL can't make gravy for squat).....and the deserts.
We kinda always split all the dishes among the family to bring, that way no one hasta stay in the kitchen for days tryin to get it all done.

NO sweet tater pie this year, I can't really tell the difference tween sweet tater pie and punkin pie if I cook it. But I just almost can't eat anyone elses punkin/sweet tater pies cuz they don't put hardly any sugar in em.

I made a pecan pie upon request from a neighbor.....she was gonna go order one from a local cafe and pay somethin like $20 for it, and I was shocked at that....so volunteered to make one for her. It's done....coolin on the stove as we speak. Tomorrow sometime I'll make the other pies.

Has anyone ever had fried mashed potatoes? It's what you do with leftover mashed taters around here.....

Yuck! Thanks for that not-so-pleasant image. :x :P

Personally, I prefer the turkey deep-fried & that's become kind of the norm for our holidays.

Yes lilly we frie our mash potatoes... You can put a slice of cheese on one side after it is cooked... Or make potatoe balls with a cheese square in the middle and bake them in the oven till the cheese starts to run..
I like turkey.... especially the dark meat..... Turkey is a nice break from beef a couple of times a year...

Or with the mashed potatoes make a shepherd's pie. Well, maybe not on Ranchersnet :P

here you go Turkey Track Bar

1lb cranberries
2 cups sugar
1/2 lb grapes
1/2 pt whipping cream or 1 tub cool whip
nuts
1/4 lb marshmallows

Run cranberries thru coarse blade of food chopper. Add sugar, let stand overnite, put in colander and let drain until dry. Whip cream, add marshmallow, nuts and grapes. Thne add drained cranberries and mix well.

We like things tart so we dont usually put all the sugar in and we like the cool whip better than the whipping cream.

Hope you enjoy and have a very happy Thanksgiving

Nope aint havin any okra fer Thanksgivin. I was lookin for some tonight tho to go in a Chicken n Dumplin recipe that was totally different. Didn't have any in the freezer..guess we done ate it all up.

I had to boil a chicken so I'd have good juice to make the gravy out of for tomorrow....and had no idea what to do with the chicken. Didn't want regular dumplins......

this recipe has a lil cornmeal, parmasian cheese, red pepper and such in the dumplins, then a can of tomatoes in the chicken broth along with parsley, onions, celery then throw the deboned chicken meat back in the pot.......roll out the dumplins, and drop lil squares of em into the boilin pot.....it went over good.....Woo hoo and I have leftovers in case I don't want Turkey dinner for supper tomorrow night :D
