The $100 Hamburger

BOCA RATON, Fla. - A hundred bucks might buy you more than six dozen burgers from McDonald's, but the the swanky Old Homestead Steakhouse will sell you one brawny beef sandwich for the same price.

Boca Raton Mayor Steven Abrams could barely speak between bites as he devoured the 20-ounce, $100 hamburger billed as the "beluga caviar of sandwiches."

"Heaven on a bun," restaurant owner Marc Sherry said.

The burger debuted Tuesday at the restaurant in the Boca Raton Resort and Club, where a membership costs $40,000 and an additional $3,600 a year.

"We've never had a hamburger on our menu here so we really wanted to go to the extreme," Sherry said, calling it "the most decadent burger in the world."

At about 5 1/2 inches across and 2 1/2 inches thick, the mound of meat is comprised of beef from three continents — American prime beef, Japanese Kobe and Argentine cattle.

The bill for one burger, with garnishing that includes organic greens, exotic mushrooms and tomatoes, comes out to $124.50 with tax and an 18 percent tip included. The restaurant will donate $10 from each sale to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

I'd have to start saving my pennies! Good that they're donating a small amount to a good cause, though. I think I'll just skip the burger, and send the whole amount to Make A Wish!

Some people just have way too much money on their hands if ya ask me. They should be donatin, about 90% of that membership fee to Make a wish instead of the 10% of the burger.

HOLY COW!! (no pun intended....well, maybe.... :wink: ).....I agree...just send make-a-wish the money instead!!! I wonder if the owners of this swanky restaurant are the same folks who run the Yellowstone Club outside of Big Sky/Bozeman who charge $35000 to be a member of their exclusive club (not to mention mandating that you have "x" amounts of millions in an account at all times)! A little too rich (hahahaaa) for me!!

I can make some folks a 100 dollar burger with some organic vegies and I will even toss in a beef for free... They can even forgoe the tip...


I have been in two country clubs as a guest that have some pretty step rates... And most have waiting lists to get in... Amazinly enough, the food stunk.

I've been to several wedding receptions, and other such parties at the country club....and I agree....the food was awful. maybe they had to resort to serving hamburgers so there'd be somethin fit to eat on the menu.

I've decided that either high end restaurants suck, or else my palate just isn't sensitive enough to appreciate the food. :lol: When I was living in the city, we occasionally wined and dined clients at $200/plate restaurants. Invariably the food wasn't worth a couple hundred bucks and I would have to stop at Mickie Ds on the way home to fill up.

I think there is generally a point of diminishing returns when it comes to how much you are paying for food. When you get to that high end stuff (my folks have meetings occasionally that take them to some of Chicago's nicer restraunts) you are paying for presentation more than for food. Yes, some of those stupid mushrooms are crazy expensive but 250 bucks a plate it nuts. I was 21 years old, living in Chicago and I ate for 12 bucks a day generally. I think when you see a 80 dollar steak, and it is a la carte, people expect it to be the best thing in the world and can't help but be disappointede... I would take a good steak fro a normal steak place over the food that I had at the expensive wedding receptions I have been too.

The nicest restraunt I went to locally around here cautioned that the meals my wife's friend and I from Montana was spicey and hot... Whatever... It was the bland and tasteless and cost way to much money. Better off getting a good steak and cooking it myself on the grill. should open up a resteraunt and go bankrupt with that instead of the farm
