The Haystack
There are stories and jokes about me and the haystack
But it is all bull and has the credence of Jack
Started by cowboys that once rode bareback
I have always sat in the hay barn alone
Away from the house and that blasted phone
And no time cowboys that bitch and moan
I have solved many problems sitting on a bale of hay
Now as age advances and my hair ermine gray
I do more sitting contemplating and planning my day
Finding solutions is exceedingly slow
I don't have the energy to strike with a blow
So I sit inside among the hay waiting for snow
The aroma of the season's hay fills the barn
It sure beats snuggled by the heater knitting yarn
I am wasting time but I don't seem to give a darn
I never was a stereotypical cowgirl
No matter how you spin or twirl
I never once wore jeans with pearl
I was a cattle girl and then a woman cattle hand
Living remote and raising livestock off the land
Working cattle and a few sheep, but never a band
So as I pose in the hay barn and remember stench of pack rat
"Oh dear," I say, "I forgot my cowboy hat"
Now I am out there talking to myself and all that
My short gray hair won't grow long without resembling a pig
So as Halloween approaches I don a wig
I look like a witch but this new look I dig
Sitting in the hay barn with my new hair adventure
With no makeup and even the absence of denture
I tried lifting a hay bale, but I couldn't bencher
Maybe I should don a cap with a ponytail
As I reminisce about riding up a mountain trail
Maybe flirt with young men and be sentenced to jail
It isn't the jail I fear with my new flowing mane
It is being called a disparaging wildlife name
I don't like mountain cougars with all their fame
I want no association with that mountain wild cat
That livestock killer, not even now as an old bat
So with online cougar hunters, I won't even chat
So now inside with my coffee I slowly sip
I am typing these words that never left my lip
Sorry about forgetting the hat and not being hip
