Prion disease and Alzheimer'sdisease: pathogenic overlap

Rudy J. Castellani, George Perryand Mark A. Smith Division of Neuropathology, Michigan State University, B218 ClinicalCenter, 138 Service Road, East Lansing, Michigan 48824, USA; Institute of Pathology, Case Western Reserve University, 2085 Adelbert Road,Cleveland, Ohio 44106, USA

CONCLUSIONS Prion diseases comprise a heterogenous group of conditions of humans and animals defined by brain accumulation of PrPsc and transmissibility. While the etiology of prion diseases remains to be elucidated, close examination of disease mechanisms demonstrates striking similarities to AD as we have presented above.

Transmissibility remains a characteristic of prion disease that has not been replicated in AD. However, when one considers the rarity of transmitted disease in humans, and the difficult with which transmission is accomplished either iatrogenically or in the laboratory, it is reasonable to suggest that transmissibility is only tangentially related to prion disease pathogenesis.

As the biochemistry of this group of disorders continues to become elucidated, transmissibility of prion diseases may become more of an artifact of a neurodegenerative process that otherwise follows accepted biochemical principles.

It has finally happened! Science is beginning to understand that TSEs are
actually SEs, and the transmissible nature of the prion is an extrapolation of laboratory technics that certainly do not apply to "EATING" prions or(SRMs)

I can't believe it is actually in print.

Your Honour, the evidence is circumstantial. Cows have not caused BSE via consumption of their nutrition proteins. They are the victim of pharmacological manipulation.

We always knew that the link to human problems would be the link we needed for the truth to come out.

No one is interested in some silly little cattle thing that can be delt with by simply puttin them in holes and letting econimics feed on the remains.

Long ways to go yet Kathy, but as you say "good news".
