You need to search the archives and look at our discussions on the repeal of the Death Tax. Very few will have to ever pay this tax,MOSTLY the very rich. Some of the most famous rich people are against this repeal, namely Bill Gates and Warren Buffet just to name two people that I've read about. They say it fosters a lot of charitable donations by people such as themselves. Its a good sounding political slogan "REPEAL THE DEATH TAX " one thing you can be sure of, if it is repealed, the working Middle Class will make up the difference in the revenues that are lost because of its repeal. If I contact my congressmen, it will be to keep it in place rather than to repeal it, as I happen to be a member of the Middle Class.

If very few pay it and the rich don't mind the tax because they don't pay it, where does the expected revenue loss come from you are worried about?

I am having a little trouble comprehending your statement. RR "If very few pay it and .......... the rich don't pay it."?????
Notice I said SOME of the richest people are against the repeal. Nowhere did I say the very rich don't pay it. When you are worth millions and have exploited every legal means available to keep from paying it , you will have to pay some theoretically or give it all to charity-at least what you haven't preserved legally.
 
The sad thing is if we set back and do nothing, because "it doesn't affect me"........................what happens when they define their idea of rich down to include more and more people and pretty soon "You" will be included in the "rich"

So sit back and don't worry about it because it doesn't affect me.....besides, someone else has to pay it.

It is our own personal choice if we sit back or not......you choose

We've paid dearly to accountants and attorneys to try to set up a long term plan to get around this, unfortunately that is what has become the "American Way". Let's kill this stupid death tax, and maybe replace it with one on Geo Metros.

I never have liked what amounts to class envy.

Just because someone can afford something, then should we penalize them? Nobody should have to pay over 30, 40, or more % in taxes. To me it is immoral for anyone in any financial class to have to pay this kind of money in taxes. Why should someone that may be worth more than the current exemption limit have to give up to half of their life savings to Uncle Sam, just because they "can afford it"?

What an assanine country we live in sometimes.
 
By the way, I don't envy Bill Gates, JR Simplot, or whoever because of what they have. I would rather aspire to be like them, rather than bring them down to my level.

There is a lot of the middle class that will be taxed through the nose on this "death tax". All it will end up doing is making an even wider gap between the very rich and the poor. There are a lot of family owned businesses on Main Street, and many modest-sized agricultural operations that will have to liquidate because they can't afford to pay this tax and still stay in business.

For instance, there is the fifteen thousand acre ranch on the Cheyenne River east of Rapid City that sold recently. Land is so high (and it is taxed accordingly) that no working rancher could possibly afford to buy this place and ever expect to pay for it by running cattle. Instead, it sold to a very wealthy couple from Florida to be used strictly for hunting. The very marginal grazing land brought $590 per acre, when it is only worth about $150 per acre to run cattle on it. Who will be better for the local community, a working rancher or rich hunters who will only visit the ranch on rare occasions?

There will be many ranches that will sell out, because of the "death tax" that needs to be paid. The Ted Turners of the world, the Mormon Church, and other mega-rich outside investors will end up owning many of these properties. They will surely not support local communities as would the more "common folk" that would like to stay on the land, but can no longer afford to do so.

Main street family-run businesses are in the same boat. They will fall by the wayside, because they can't afford the estate taxes. Walmart and other large corporative businesses will get bigger, and the old community guard will no longer exist.

The great United States of America will benefit tremendously if the Death Tax is permanently repealed.

I'm in agreement with you, Cal. Also, the truth about the Death Tax has been obscured, because of the rich. We as ranchers are "rich" in land, but cash flow is sometimes not flowing. If you had to pay the death Tax because your land is worth millions, but you have no cash flow or very little, you will eventually have to sell the place to pay the tax. DON'T YOU GUYS GET IT????????????????

Yes Death tax needs to go !! recently had a neighbor that inherited the ole mans place,had to sell a big part of it to hang on to the rest,property had been in their family many years................good luck

PS this so called Capital gains tax can go right along with it.
 
Life insurance can pay the taxes.

Estate planning is something that should be done death tax or not.

Who is to say who can and cannot buy real estate? The last I looked in a free market the land sells to the one the owner says, usually the highest offer.

Land has long since passed the agricultural value it possesses. Land is an investment.

You are right, but land has gone up a lot higher and faster than even gasoline. On the ranch I mentioned, it is too high to pay for with cattle even at the $150 figure, but that is probably all it would have brought as recently as two or three years ago.

Does the American public want to keep any land for agriculture, or do they want to completely sell out to the highest bidder, and end up either developing the land, paving it over, or putting it into non-production such as the Nature Conservancy? Eliminating the death tax would certainly put ranchers and developers on more even footing.
