Excellent prices for this fall.........reputation replacement cattle will sometimes see the heifers outselling the steers. What kind of commission rates are US markets charging for selling cattle this fall?

At Valentine Livestock Auction, commission is $8.30 per calf. Then there is brand inspection at 75 cents per head, veterinary health inspection at 35 cents per head, insurance at 40 cents per head, yardage at $1.50 per head, not to mention trucking. My trucking bill for hauling about sixty miles comes to $3.70 per head. Altogether my selling expense totals about $16 per calf. Hopefully this money contributes in helping keep the local communities viable and alive. :? :wink:

Wow. In these parts we pay about $18.50 commission per calf, $3.00 check off, for us trucking is a min. of $10 per calf for the closest auction, and I can't remember the brand inspection but it's not bad at all. Shrink can play a big factor as most auctions like to try to charge us 3% shrink as well. But tougher times at the auctions has made that negotiable, often zero.

Just curious, Soapweed....Is the commission actually a fixed per head charge, or it is a percent of gross dollars? Around here, it seems like most barns charge between 2 and 3 percent of gross dollars. Vet inspection, insurance, yardage, beef promotion, etc., is a "per head" charge.

A good customer of ours sold a big group of replacement heifers yesterday at Philip Livestock, they were lighter than last year, but still had a huge demand. Here is how they sold.

97 head of 547 lbs heifers brought $119.50/cwt
45 head of the same weight brought $112.00/cwt
218 head of 480 lbs heifers brought $115.50/cwt
110 head of 471 lbs heifers brought $113.50/cwt


Right after these sold a very nice set of Black replacement heifers weighing the same brought $98/cwt.

Those red heifers at Philip brought some pretty impressive prices.

Valentine on October 22nd had a real good sale, also, with Red Angus heifers being the stars of the show. Here were a few results of red replacement heifers:

26 head 606 pounds @ $740 per head ($122.00 per cwt)
22 head 567 pounds @ $640 per head ($112.90 per cwt)
45 head 547 pounds @ $595 per head ($115.75 per cwt)
61 head 548 pounds @ $650 per head ($118.60 per cwt)
18 head 543 pounds @ $630 per head ($116.00 per cwt)

Some of the black Angus heifers didn't sell too badly, either:

97 head 527 pounds @ $600 per head ($113.85 per cwt)
61 head 539 pounds @ $555 per head ($103.00 per cwt)
18 head 546 pounds @ $610 per head ($105.90 per cwt)
34 head 547 pounds @ $545 per head ($ 99.65 per cwt)

I am quite happy with the 61 head of black heifers that I purchased on October 15th, which averaged 581 pounds @$94.34 per cwt, or $548.50 per head.
They appeared to be a bargain looking back a week later. :wink:

I was happy to hear about this when I heard it the other day. I truely believe we are finally in a time where their is a premium for the good cattle. With prices like this, I can see why some guys don't cross breed.

The tax implications of selling good red and black baldies can be quite daunting!!! I always pay a premium for the RIGHT replacement heifers-There's some Hereford guys breed all their heifers black and I get all the baldies-no sort taken off so they are worth a premium because I sell them at a premium.
