UNITED STATES: The Texas town of Waco offers a $1.5 million incentive package to Sanderson Farms to facilitate the construction of a planned chicken processing plant.

The Waco, Tex. city council unanimously approved a $1.5 million incentive package to Laurel, Miss.-headquartered poultry processor Sanderson Farms to aid in the construction of a planned $70 million, 170,000-square-foot processing plant and hatchery. The plant is scheduled to open in 2007, according to the Waco Tribune-Herald newspaper.

The Waco-McLennan County Economic Development Corp. will pay for the incentives. Waco mayor Virginia DuPuy said the package is a "very wise investment" that will yield financial returns for the city. The plant and hatchery are expected to bring 1,300 new jobs to Waco, the single-largest number of jobs created by one project for the city.

"I really think they [Sanderson Farms] came to town looking for the site best-suited for them, and they only asked what was customary in incentives," city manager Larry Groth told the Waco Tribune-Herald. "It's a good return for the community."

The next step is to get the McLennan County commissioners to approve the incentive package. However, commission approval is expected at a meeting next week. Because of the way the law is written, the city of Waco must approve such incentives before the county can approve them, the newspaper explained.

In addition to the incentive package, Sanderson Farms will also receive $500,000 from the Texas Enterprise Fund, a state government fund used to promote economic development. Money from the fund can be spent only with the approval of governor Rick Perry, lieutenant governor David Dewhurst, and speaker of the Texas House Tom Craddick.
