The storm

FH-- I've seen several backward coming calves during the times I've had cows corraled or was checking closely because of weather--which makes me convinced there is a lot more that come that way we never see....
One of the reasons I prefer lower birthweight and easier calving bulls- because as long as they get them out fast enough most survive...
 
I've observed ewes having lambs backwards and the lambs survived. Never personally observed it with cattle but OT and FH, your experiences prove it can and does happen.

I think sometimes when I find a newborn dead calf for no apparent reason is that it might have been backwards and the cow didn't get to work on it quick enough.

Same thing for some calves that come the right way, and still have a bag of fluid over their nose.

Just a nasty day weatherwise but could be a whole lot worse. I-90 now officially closed from Sheridan WY to Wall SD. Along with the no-travel advisory Sturgis police say they will ticket anyone stuck in the street that impairs snow removal and have to be towed.

Union Center SD just reported 5 inches of snow today. Wind is not as bad as the last storm.
 
Well, as blizzards go, this is probably a Category II whereas last week's was probably a Category IV. With the amount of snow and 70+ mph wind gusts last week, it was nearly impossible to do anything. The only thing we could have had worse last week was below zero temperatures. The temps hovered in the low to mid twenties.

Wind gusts are supposed to max at about 40-45 mph with this one so at least a person can see and function when out and about. I was just out a bit ago and actually got a good look through the cows to make sure no one was calving. Don't get me wrong, it is not nice and it will darn sure plug everything up tight again, but half as much wind makes a big difference.
 
Southcentral North Dakota is socked in with an old time March snowstorm. Big, wet flakes, and 30+ mph winds. Probably 6-8" new snow, luckily a good melt last week did bare most ground. Sounds like it should be done by Tuesday morning. Bismarck, ND is poised to set all-time snowfall total as we speak. The only good thing is that May 1 is the same day on the calendar each year. Fortunately no major rivers close by so flooding is not major issue. Although lots of rural roads have water going over them, heading for a lower spot. This won't be good for the Red Rvier Valley.
 
Wasn't to bad here, about 6" of snow and 25-35 mph winds with temps in the 20's. Actually the moisture is welcome. we didn't get anything out of the previous storm. Didn't have any heifers calve in the snow yet. They are holding out for nice weather?? :D :D
