The wood floors work in progress

The wood floor in the rental house I was dismaying about....with all the bad stuff sanded off

where a wall was removed, have to do something about that.

sanded a path to the john :lol:

the wood paneling is uggggly, and I know there are good straight walls underneath it.

every house should have an antique piano taking up space in the basement

Looks like you have a lot of quarter-sawn boards in the second pic. I just don't know if there is a prettier floor than that once it's all finished! I wish I had a whole floorful of them instead of carpet

On the ugly paneling... If it is a good 1/4 inch wood paneling. Run a chair rail and paint the rail and paneling below the rail. Wood filler in the groves above the rail and wallpaper. If you don't want to put that much work into it, just paining the paneling can help.

looking good Cal. Tam is in the process of fixing up the old ranch house in the yard. We took the top story off 10 or 12 years ago and it became a catch all. We cleaned it out this summer and she is getting a start on the remodeling. We have to re plumb and rewire most of it but it does have sewer and water to the house.

Can you pull it up? If so use that to fill in where the wall was. Looks like the bottom plate is still in the floor.

We had a project like yours...tore up the carpet in our house and behold beautiful finished wood floors...original to the house and the only thing I had to do was dust it,,and by do they shine...we got real lucky on that deal...Our house has got to be around 80yrs old...

Your floors are gonna look fantastic!

You know, that's a good idea to sacrifice the floor in a closet. The one closet that doesn't have any carpet in it, I don't think is big enough. The other two have carpet glued down to them like somebody was afraid it might get stolen :? , and of course has never been walked on or been in the sun to break any of it down. Would take some work.

An hour or two? Yeah, fer sure. :lol:

Have now officially turned the rest of the finishing over to the couple that are moving in....in lieu of rent.

What do you think would be underneath it? Could it be attached somehow to plaster and lath walls? Early to mid 50s would be too early for sheetrock, right?

I think antique pianos are almost free. The lid and legs, and whatever, should make nice hardwood end tables....ya think?

Nothing nice comes easy. We put bamboo flooring in our entire main floor this spring. (and yes, even in the closets! :x )

The floor looks fantastic, but then there was the 10 x 12 rug under the dining room table, then the dining room table wasn't good enough, so the Boss had our neighbor, who is a master wood butcher, build a bamboo table our of extra flooring, along with a combination shoe box/seat in the front hallway, and now he is working on a toybox and a coffee table with the rest.

I just wish I didn't have to take my boots off EVERY TIME I step in the house, but when I think about the size check I wrote for the flooring, they come off pretty easy. :wink:

You did get lucky on your project. That's how it always goes on those home remodeling shows, as well.

In our house we had maple floors installed upstairs. The finish that was put on them has been a big disappointment. There's not much shine to it, even though that's what we told them we wanted, and the finish scratches real easily. Almost like a coating of Elmer's school glue. :x

Exterior walls look like stuccoed wall to me (just a guess from the photo) so I guess the inside could have been stuccoed also. Looking at the depth of the window sill, I'm not exactly inclined to think so. Doesn't look deep enough. I think wallboard producs may have been available back in the 50's so it could have something under it.

If a sheetrock type product were available back in the '50s I doubt they would have overlay paneling on it at that time. Only thing that does stick out a bit is pre-finished look of paneling. Seems to me most of the time the light color (white) panelings were the photo finsh (paper finish) type. Since I don't know the history, I'd say the paneling might have been installed withing the last 35 years or so. So it could have some sort of wallboard behind it. Most likely glue would have been involved to so removing the paneling might lead to more sheetrock work.

:lol: Actually, she was gone through part of it. We've been through some fix-up messes before.....I let her keep the rent checks, that sweetens her up a little, not that she isn't already sweet. :wink:
