This is Reb, a male full blooded Aussie. Man is he hard headed and tuff'! Kind'a reminds me of someone who lives here!

Driver_s_Licenses_Pic.JPG

This is my tri color Reg. Aussie....Bruiser! I rescued him from Doggie Death Row. He's still in Cow Dog 101....but this pic looks like it belongs on his Driver Licenses!! The first thing he does when he meets someone new....is run up...sit flat on this butt...and throw his paw out to you for a " shake" with that goody grin on his face!!!

Yeah, well, you ought to see who he had to whip to get to set there!

When I first got him home, (the size he was in the first pic) he jumped out of the open window of a 3/4 ton Dodge and lit right on his nose in a gravel road. He just kept quiet and went on about his business, as if it was normal to do so!

He's just now figuring out that there are cows and horses around here and that perhaps his mission in life is to make them do what he wants! :D

When the older dog was working some cows, a while back, he got the darndest expression on his face, like "Oh, is that what them things are around here for?"

Now we are working on, "don't bark and especcially at the horses". So far he's never been kicked, but it's coming one of these days. I'm thinking that he's the kind of dog to take it as an insult and will want to get some retribution!

I had always heard that Aussies are slower to develope, than Border collies, and I think it's right. The older dog didn't seem to want to really bear down and do what you said until she was about 2. She is a border collie X Aussie.

They also say that Aussies like a routine. He wants to do the chores in the morning, just the same as we did it the day before and is puzzled when you do something different or at a different time.

Pretty cool dogs though. My folks had one they called 'Polka'. They used her on cattle when dad worked on ranches, but this dog also played hide and seek, Annie Over, and lots of fun things.

She'd stay on one side of the house and they would throw the ball over. She would catch the ball and run around the side of the house where they were.

She herded everything. Ducks, chickens, sheep, she wasn't particular.
Fun dog!!!!

The female is a stick packer. She is always running around with a stick in her mouth and she brings them all up to the house and drops them. If I could just get her to pack them back to the wood pile!

She does drop the sticks when there are cows to work.

The younger dog will take them if she drops them. But he just wants to play and to her, it is a job! :x

I think the stick toting is common w/ these dogs. Mine carries one while she is working the cows. I keep one in my hand because I can work my cows on foot and it extends my reach....but why she does it...who knows!

All 3 of mine have done it from one time to the other! And if you reach down and throw it back into the woods from whence it came. Holy Smokes not greater sin was done. They go tearing off into the woods and find that very stick and bring it back a drop it in the yard and walk off!!!

Nice computer, Jinglebob. 8)

And there's not much cuter than an Aussie pup. Thanks for sharing, guys.
So far as dogs go... Since that's what brought me to this board in the first place, I should show off the one I found:
Beau-- Half McNab, 1/4BC, 1/4blue heeler

And here's his oddity:

He smiles. But only when he's really excited. In fact, the pic is slightly blurred because he was wiggling so bad. But I've never seen a dog do this when they weren't threatened, grumpy, whatever. For him it's only when he's happy/excited.

Love it!!! My Aussie, rest his soul, would do that when you'd tell him...like when he met someone new!! But no where as good as that!!

The one, Bruiser, thats in the Gallery pic came to half way trained. He'd lay down when you'd say " BANG"...his previous owner taught him that.

One day I had the starter pistol out scaring away some crows and every time I'd fire it Bruiser would just fall down like he was dead!!

Somehow in his doggie mind he was hearing BANG and was doing what he was trained to do. Now I'm wondering how I will keep him upright where deer season starts cause you can hear the guns in the distant in the woods!!!!

My dad has this whole routine he and my brother taught his German Shorthair, Duck.

"Duck! What do you do when you see Dick Brown?!" (one of Dad's best friends and hunting buddy )

The dog drops to the floor looking big eyed.

"And what if he has a gun?!"

The dog smacks his head down to the floor, too.

"And what if that gun actually goes off?!" he then points his finger at the dog and says, "Bang!!"

Duck rolls over and plays dead.

Dogs can be so dog-gone much fun...

We had friends whose dog would 'smile', HMW. What they said was "give us your Pepsodent smile", and most of the time he would oblige.

I took the census in Wyoming in 1970. I covered the big Powder River country and ran into all kinds of dogs. The only one that bit me was a Dauchshund.

I had a male Aussie that would run out and sit next to the drivers side door of any car that drove in - He was all Smiles but No One would get out of their Car/Truck

The Bad one would sit at my side until I'd give him the word - then he'd jump on the hood and tear of the Wind-Sheld-Wripers

:D :D with out her knowing it - I taught my wifes Min-Pin to hate the wifes Monther - She [the dog] had to be locked up when ever my Mother-in-Law came round.
I'd just say - 8) "how dog are such a good judge of people" :!: :D :D

Personally I think it a BAD IDEA to let the same dog work Horses & Cattle :!:

Border Collies are always busy - My Angus/"Angus and/or" Eared Cattle" will not but-up with busy-dogs.

My dogs are quite around the livestock and do not up-set the cows - yet when you need the thy are there - Most Border Collie-Peole have to run back to the truck to get their dog - BC are good about not barking when they are working BUT if you chain them up it's Bark - Bark - Bark

Many Trainers let them get away with that! At Al Zuppin (sp) Seimars your are told "Shut That Dog Up or Leave" :!:

I Love Dog Stories :!:

We had a black lab that smiled but only when we returned home.
Never any other time which seemed strange.
However, if she'd done something bad while we were out, then
she wouldn't smile. She felt guilt better than some people!
