Last Sunday, Shortgrass had a very good message on his Good Sunday Morning thread, got me to thinking and when I think, sometimes words come out. Thanks Shortgrass
THINGS THAT MATTER
Had a good friend remind me, just the other day
We have too many distractions, getting in our way
Too many treasures dangling, like carrots on a stick
Too many temptations, waiting to turn a trick.
My friend just had to tell me, what it is we are all about
Just as we were opening the gate, to turn the cattle out.
"We are caring for the animals, feeding others of our kind
It is just not right, seems others have lost their mind.
The things that matter most, they don't sparkle and don't shine
What matters most is my family, and those close friends of mine.
I can count on real friends, to lend a hand to me
As for family, that one is simple, anyone should see."
"Now don't take me wrong, these people think it's alright
To chase after expensive things, I think it's similar to blight.
We that care for God's animals, view the world in a different way".
With the cold wind blowing, it was hard to hear what he had to say.
"After fightin' with the fires, and working' in the cold,
A different sort of thinkin', starts to take a hold.
A feller starts thinkin' of what matters, not all that other fluff,
He starts thinking about good times, all the important stuff".
I knew that he was on a roll, and got off and opened the gate,
That warm house and some dinner, they would have to wait.
I just kept my mouth closed, let him continue with his rant
Sometimes you can speak up, then there's times you can't.
"Now you look at them little kids of yours, playing all day long
The things they were playing with, could be gotten for a song.
That old junk you thought you had cleaned up, then you hauled away
Brought back for some better plan, used by pirates for a day.
That old broken down wagon, you was supposed to haul off and burn,
Made for a dandy ship today, that's how ranch kids learn.
Now they don't need no TV, to invent for them fun and a game,
They just need to be kids, say, is that horse of yours getting lame?"
I felt that I was nearing, the end of another horseback verse,
My attention span was fading, hunger had only gotten worse.
The barn was in full view now, I was all for getting down,
Then he said to me, "Better take that wife of yours to town."
I think I got the meaning of his message, as he was headed up the road,
What's worth having in this life, can't be bought and can't be sold.
And when the game is done, it doesn't matter how many chips are in your pile,
What matters most is how many friends and family, walk that long last mile.
