Things to keep in your pickup

A shotgun
a roll of ' duck' tape
a hammer.........and you can then RULE THE WORLD!!!!!

If you can't fix it with the either the hammer or tape.....shoot it!

a spare key in a magnetic container, secured where it can be found if you accidentally lock yourself out of the pickup
I just did that the other day, bought a magnetic key holder that just happen to be in the truck, and extra key was in the ole' ladys car.Luckily my back window was unlocked, hard to get around the headache rack on the flatbed though :x

2 or 3 sturdy pieces of lath will get you into any vehicle, and come in handy for other things too, like holding fence wires up til you get back with a proper post. Or for a quick obedience lesson with the dog.
A set of open ends, a 1/2" drive and a pair of vice grips can come in pretty handy often times.
And the dog, 'specially if he knows you've got the lath with you
