Was shoeing a couple horses today, one of em had a mild case of thrush, anyone have a good home remedy ?
good luck

We have diluted bleach with water and put it in a coffee can or bucket and soaked the hoof. They make an epoxy treatment that sets up quick and keeps the medicine in while keeping manure and dirt out. let us know who it turns out.

I have also done the bleach thing but I didn't soak em ...I don't have time for that..lol....1 part bleach 2 parts water and put it in an old dishsoap bottle, clean the hoof as good as you can, then give the frog a good squirting. I did it twice a day for a week( 7 day week) and really by day 5 I could have stopped but I wanted to be "safe"
I have also used off brand athlete's foot cream ( thrush is a fungus, so is athlete's foot) Read the lable and follow...some say once a day others say twice a day...I buy the once a day type ( the types do have diff. med. in them) I use it for about a week and it clears it up and the cream seems to stay in/on the hoof well, unless the footing the horse will be in is deep.
I'm sure you know if you can give the ol guy a nice dry place to stand for a few days that will really help out a ton while your treating it..
That other store bought stuff that is like epoxy is AWESOME it works great and it's easy to use.....heres a link to the stuff I have used....http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?PGGUID=55f20349-643f-4833-9a1d-b43d52e59e25 I have seen it cheaper in other stores ...I also like thrushbuster...the purple stuff in the bottle it works very well too and is waterproof.

My Preference is iodine over Bleach. Iodine will penetrate any dirt that you do not get cleaned out while Bleach is more of a surface cleaner... I like the thoroughness of Iodine just in case i miss a spot of dirt,

BTW Haymaker, you answered my question on the thrush on the other post here...
