Okay, so I spent some time Saturday morning talking to my mechanic who was working on my John Deere. He'd repaired the clutch back in January when I was in the States. The most recent problem seemed to be with the PTO.

He told me the JD was great for plowing and "light" PTO work but that some of the virgin rain forest I was trying to mow down with my bush hog was just too much for the PTO.

I asked what he'd recommend as it related to PTO problems and his favorite was the Massey Ferguson because of the PTO design. Very few problems with the MF PTO according to him.

However, we finally got to a point in the conversation where he asked if I'd be baling hay. :shock: When I told him I'd planted (or was going to plant) a total of about 100 acres of bermuda for baling, he told me what I need to buy was a Valtra. According to him, the Valtra would do everything the other two would do and be a great tractor for baling. He also seemed really high on the Catepillar engines.

I had a Valtra working at the place for a few months and never saw it develop any problems. Having said that, it was only doing a bit of plowing and cutting pasture.

Any thoughts from those who've worked with these brands?
 
I would probably go with whatever brand I felt the dealer offered the best service after the sale.

As for tractor durability in general I think it is better to have a bigger tractor than you actually need for your implements. There is much less wear and tear on a big tractor doing a small job than a small tractor doing a big job.

Excellent advice John. I fell into that trap, even though I should have known better, when I bought my JD.

I figured I'd use it for light bush hogging, etc. Well, I use the darned thing every day and probably try to do far more with it than I should be doing. It's a 95 HP model and I'd have been better served going with something on the order of 120 horses.

Oh well, live and learn. :?
