This year we tried a new to us technique that we saw at a field day last year...
The rolling machine

The handplanting into the mulch is not as quick as the tree planter but the research shows that the trees should grow twice as fast and there is no weeding to do.

I have in no particular order
2 types of lilac
saskatoons
raspberry
hawthorn
snowberry
chokecherry
acute willow
white spruce

Pretty close to that fence aren't they?

We planted a bunch back in the 80's. They struggled for quite a while but I have some nice rows of Carraganas :?

Cherry leaves are poisioness to cows when wilted.

That plastic does work well we just had an individual mat for every tree so was slow planting. I imagine silocover plastic would work you could cut however wide strip you wanted off the roll. I missed the order date for this year -so were fencing off the places we want to plant.

The outside fence is now for show. They will be fenced off from the cows on the other side. In 10-15 years I will have a windbreak so I can graze calves to the right of the trees (west) all winter long.

They told us we can break it a year early, drop the plastic in the fall and then just plant trees in the spring...of course that assumes we are caught up enough to do that (BIG ASSUMPTION)
