From time to time I read on here about tree's some have them and others are wishing for them. I am in an area that we have trees of all types Oak,Ash,Hackberry,Maple,Cottonwood,Elm,Hedge(osage orange), Cedar and Locust to name a few. It is a constant battle to keep them in check especialy the Hedge,Locust and Cedar. I was out cutting some the other day and snapped a few photo's and thought I would share them. I am working on a small pasture that I aquired last year in an effort to improve it's usefullness..

Here are some of the Hedge that I am needing to get rid of..

Here is some that I cleaned up and piled up good enough till I can get the tractor over to the pasture to really clean them up right..

What the heck?? Where did that darn thistle come from???

Someone thought they were helping but leaving a stump a foot tall that won't be rotten for at least 25-30 yrs is a bad deal..

I set my saw by this one for perspective.. Also you might have notice that the the pasture is over grazed and I did that on purpose last fall so I could find all these stumps and get rid of them...

I snapped a couple shots inbetween chores tonight of some cedars where the aren't suppose to be.. Oh and these are on the neighbors I have some spots of small ones but they have trouble brewing leaving these go. They had them sheared about 20 yrs ago and never did anything since to keep up with them.

I have been using a chainsaw and brush cutter (big weed eater with saw blade on it) and my 4whlr and tree cutter to keep up with most of mine. but it is a real struggle especially the last few yrs with the dry weather the birds seem to really be seeding the trees from eating the seeds. It is a bad deal I know of pastures that are 1-200 acres that are completely junk because of the trees have taken then completely over.... :cry2:

However, I look at it as a blessing. We do cut the brush that encrouches on our pasture. But much of that heats two houses over the winter. I have started taking the hardwoods to the saw mill. Much cheaper than buying boards these days. Cedar makes excellent posts. I figure it's my way of fighing inflation and using the resources at hand. If worse comes to worse I think China or Japan will take you trees. Also maybe you could band together with your neighbors and sell the carbon credits.

Thanks for sharin your fence chore pictures. Soon we will be cleanin out and rebuildin the fence that runs along the RR here. Measured it all the other day and comes to 6900 ft or somethin like that. It's basically ALL Trees, and where it's not trees, it's youpon (lovely stuff NOT) I'll hafta take some pictures when we get started and post them. What we will end up takin out of these fences would probably heat all the houses in our lil town for several winters LOL
We were talkin the other day, as we were measurin, that there's some mighty big trees in these fences...we'll leave the big ones and just take out the small ones.

Just out of curiosity, do you save the hedge for posts? We're always looking for hedge posts...I know down in your country cedars can take over in a hurry, good luck with all the work ya've got to do..Thanks for the pictures...

Got goats???? They'll fix this up in a hurry, which is what goats do best. 2 strand electric, a good fencer and some type of a guard animal. We have a similar situation with a different type of brush. They are really cleaning up the brush and improving our grass at the same time. The kids are worth a lot too when you sell them. Very worthwhile.

Stretch,
I have a couple guys here in my creek, cutting hedge. they are leaving me all the corners and 25% of the lines. they pile the trash, and stack my share where I tell them.

if you have any big trees, they will be more than happy to clean it up for you!

if you want, PM me and I will get you thier number.

cedardell We cut all the dead wood we can for fire wood and pile up the rest for either ditch fill or we burn them some time. Fact is we just put in a new wood furnace to keep warm last fall. A Hotblast made by US Stoves I believe is the outfit, and wouldn't be without it...... Many of the trees that I don't want (cedar hedge and Locust) are mostly small and brush like. The cedars are a pain but are easily handled for me, Locust on the other hand are a real thorn in my side (sorry for the pun  ). They are a real mess they are full of thorns and either I or the 4whlr or tractor ends up diggin stickers out of me or the them tires because of the stickers, I really hate them. The hedge we just try to corral and keep to the side or in a fence row, ect to keep them under control.

Jassy-jigs I cut and save all the hedge I can I have several miles of fence that needs my attention bad. I hate them oil soaked POS that can be bought up town they are junk compared to a Hedge post. Oh and jigs I am way to stingy to let anyone cut any hedge on my stuff I don't have nearly enough to do all the building I need to   You know maybe I will have to stop in for a tour of them post piles.

rainie Goats might be an option but I think for now I will just stay with how I am doing it. I am a bit to spreadout and the pastures are to small to use goats very well I am afraid. Not a bad option though as I really am not to crazy about using chemicals or mechanical means if I can get away not using them...

the_jersey_lilly_2000 I sure don't envy you having to build about a mile and a half of fence that is a real job. Dumb question for you but what kind of fence do you have to build along the RR (Woven wire, Barb wire or high tensil)? Where ever I build fence I just cut everything out and get a clean shot as best as I can makes building fence a lot easier...

Here is a shot of the tree cuttin' crew. Notice anything wrong with the photo? I am thinking need to be the one on the 4whlr and not Cody....

equip program around here is paying $50 and acre to get rid of those trees !!!

and good luck on that post pile....take all you want, just look out for the bear traps!!!

Stretch,
RR will furnish T Posts for every 10 ft, and then a wood post(not sure what size). Then 5 strands of barbed wire.
The wood posts they furnish won't be used in our fence much if any. they are the treated kind. We will be usin mostly bridge timber that they gave us when they redone some of the RR Trustle(sp) bridges.(They'd rather give them away than to hafta pay someone to haul em off - they are 12 x 14) the wood posts they do furnish will be used somewhere else on a strait fence. The RR fence has a huge big curve, and it's really hard to build a tight fence on a curve like that.

High tensil here is a pain.....a BIG PAIN. There's so many different varieties of vines that grow, it wouldnt take 6 mo for them to over take the high tensil wire. We do have high tensil on our catch lot before it goes to the corrals......it was rebuilt 2 years ago, and is a job to keep it maintained.

We have those locust trees too. I hate em, along with all the red hawl and black hawl thorn bushes. Seems more of the unwanted bushes trees and vines have thorns than not.

the_jersey_lilly_2000... It sounds like you have your work cut out for you. Putting a post every 10 ft and 5 wires would make a quite a fence. I got to ask what kind of digger do you have that will dig a hole big enough to set a 12x14 post that would be a real pain..... Also what is your soil like (sandy, rocky clay)? We kind of have it all sand, lime stone and clay. Most of the corners I usually set are 8-10 inches or so and that is a round post and they are dang heavy. Course mine are hedge and so they are not straight and so often the hole I dig needs a little chopping to make them fit.......
