Trouble with calf table

We have been having trouble with our foremost calf table the last couple of days and I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to fix it. The latch on the handle that holds the squeeze once you have tipped it no longer catches, so as soon as you put a hot iron on a calf, it slips and there is no squeeze. Make for a sloppy brand. Has anyone else had this problem?
 
I'm sure 5 minutes with a welder and a grinder and it would be fixed. Not Knowing or seeing it I would bet the cog has worn and needs a little TLC. We have a slam latch on all of the trailers we build but they wear and about 2 minutes I can have them working good as new but most people don't look at it to notice the problem.
 
Picture of the center squeeze latch would help. I'm not as familiar with Foremost, I'm betting Denny is right.. How old is it?

I had one. NEVER open the head gate if a calf has a leg stuck out the side. A spiral fracture is something a person doesn't easily forget. Not on me--the calf.
 
Your calf table has what is called a friction lock. It isn't grabbing. I haven't used enough products with Friction locks, but her people describing them not holding. Usually happens when they get wet.
 
My neighbor had the same problem, we fixed it with a junk mechanical fence stretcher. Replaced the keep it closed mechanism with the fence stretcher. It worked pretty well.
 
I just got a new Priefert and it says right on the friction locks replace yearly. I'm sure use would dictate that and it also says do not lubricate friction locks.
