They believed they were living "the life of Riley" in their retirement years.
All that changed yesterday.
A rural home in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan received a surprise visit from two wolves early Thursday morning.
Ontonagon County residents Bob and Golden Riley were aroused when the family dog 'went ballistic' about 2 a.m.
Two wolves came right up to the deck of the family's home, leaving a shaken family unable to return to sleep and Dylan the dog in a protective frenzy.
Mrs. Riley kept Dylan's leash short when walking today, not knowing if their home was still being stalked.
Son Neil's van came under close scrutiny as Mrs. Riley checked all possible wolf hiding places.
"I don't mind telling you that I'm nervous, but angry, too," Mrs. Riley said. "We moved here for peace and quiet in our golden years, not to be stalked by large predators that view my dog as a meal!"
"We're originally from the Chesapeake Bay region, and never in our wildest dreams did we think we'd ever see wolves peering into our home! This is America, not Siberia. These wolves were not in the least bit shy; they acted like they were very used to people and dogs. We don't have any livestock for them to eat; were they planning to dine on our dog?" Dylan tugged at his leash and looked around intently, as though something unseen might be looking back, all his senses working overtime.
The Rileys plan to stay, but they're hoping the wolves decide to relocate.
