And to elaborate further, (if memry servers) ol' joe kirby had a patent on that thing. Joe was good at checkers, could be beat at crib---maybe a left brain/right brain thing?

I read an account of the old freighters in Montana Territory years ago. they said the freighters would drive a small wedge into a crack between the staves of a barrel of whiskey at night and catch a tin cup full then remove the wedge to stop the leak, and they would have a toddy in the evening. Some of the barrels were almost empty by the time they arrived at their destination. One store keeper got fed up with one particular freighter, who he knew could not read and ordered a barrel of wood alcohol, or something similar, that would kill a person. Sure enough, they found the freighter dead along the trail, at a camp, as I remember the story.
