I do a lot of talking and camera clicking but not much work. My job is to document all of the work that the others do. :-)

Quite a few ranchers in my area put out the iodized cobalt (blue) salt blocks. They claim that they have far fewer cases of hoof rot. I don't know if there's anything to it or not.

Soapweed,

Couple questions. Do you fertilize your hay or pastures? If not how do you keep up with nutrient removal from haying?

How do you keepy the area around your water tanks from becoming manure swamps when the weather is hot and the cows all group up around watering areas if there is not much shade?

What is your solution for fly control?

Thanks,

BCR

We would have just used LA200, but didn't have any on hand. We ended up using NuFlor.

No, other than what the cows put back on themselves.

The cows put nitrogen back into the soil, both liquid and solid, all by themselves.

Our dry climate usually takes care of this problem. Actually, "manure swamps" aren't nearly as much of a problem as blowing sand from wear and tear on the ground. Sometimes we haul junk hay or barn cleanings to these beat out areas to keep them from blowing.

What is your solution for fly control?

Nature provides fly swatters, which come equipped on the cows.

We started using Micotil for footrot quite a while back. It is a little more expensive but is sub-Q and one shot most always does the trick.

There have been enough people killed from using Micotil that we have decided not to use it. You can get struck by a stray bullet and survive; you can get bitten by a rattlesnake and live through it; but if you accidentally get poked with a Micotil needle you are automatically a goner. It's just not worth the risk.

A guy learns something every day. I had never heard that before Soap, now I should throw it out or will surely stab myself trying to be too careful.

Thanks.

I don't use it anymore just because Draxxin is so much better but name one person you know that has died from Micotil! I don't doubt that it cannot kill a guy but come one the reason your not using it is because better drugs have come along. It is a muscle relaxer and if you get enough you can put your heart into arythrmic shock but come on guys how many times that you've been poked by a needle have you ever injected more that a cc in?

I accidentally stabbed the bottom of my thumb one time with just a needle that had been in a blackleg bottle. My thumb swelled up until it looked like the drumstick on a turkey.

We use Micotil as a last resort drug. Usually they've had something else and just need more. At our operation every calf counts as everything around here is earned and it makes it very important to have every calf make it come fall. Micotil is dangerous if not used in a safe way. It is a risk but there's also the risk that the ole gentle horse in the barn that you've had forever will one day kick ya in the head. It's with anything being cautious and safe goes a long way.

Good pictures Soap. There's been a bit of foot rot this summer. I agree with you regarding the Micotil, there's plenty of risk in life without adding that, especially when treating something that's not restrained in a chute.
