We made our yearly trip to Southeastern Utah last weekend to look for turkeys. This year it was my Dad's turn to draw the tag. The winter has been unbelieveable in that country. Monticello, Utah gets 55 inches of snow on a normal year. this year to date they are at 139 and change! Made for an interesting trip. Here are the kids in front of the snow covered Abajo or Blue Mountains.

A bull session about where to look for turkeys. The low country had melted off nicely.

We roughed it in a motel this year. Kids could watch cartoons in camo! You'll see why tent camping wouldnt of been much fun in a minute.

Littlest H likes hunting turkeys! :D

Up this road about 10 miles is really good turkey hunting. Except this year!

Dad is 6'4". The snow really stacked up. Must be the missing snow some of ya'll have been looking for.

We looked til our eyes hurt.

But the veiw made it all worth it! If ya'll get the chance to visit Utah, DO IT! We have lots of National Parks like Zions and Arches. Plus our regular plain old mountains are easy on the senses!

Indian ruins are everywhere. These cliff dwellings just amaze me!

A Room with a view!

This country has many old homesteads like this one. They still run lots of cattle down there too. Plus a lot of dry farming. I could live down that-a-way pretty easily. :D

Montana isnt the only place with Big Sky!

In our travels we found this set of corrals with rock walls on three sides. Ought'a turn most cows but I've known a few who might need another course or six of rock. I've known a few that would need enough more rocks to start a nice gravel pit!

I guess you build with what is handy right? :D

We even journeyed way out west on Elk Mountain but the turkey's were still in hibernation. Looking back to the east at the Blue's.

We'd head up a promising road and get stopped by snow. Still was a bunch of fun though.

Can you see the Horse Head on the mountain The Indians knew about it as did the early settlers. It's a neat landmark in these parts.

A zoomed in shot.

We made a trip to Dove Creek Colorado to pick up some beans. Look up Adobe Milling Company and Anasazi beans on the internet and order some. You'll love them! They are really creamy and have way less gas than regular pinto beans. They found them in indian ruins years and years ago. So they tried planting some. Cool eh? Plus they have some neat mounts in their store. This buck is 30 wide with cool extra inlines.

Another buck with extras.

Kind of a neat way to make a pedestal mount using shed elk horns.

They say it aint over til the fat lady sings! Well here's the Fat Lady rock and she must'a been singing. The turkeys won but we had a great vacation.

I stretch the tape clear out to 5'11". But next to Dad, I look like I should be singing about the lollypop guild. He's a big guy in stature but an even bigger guy in heart and service and friendship. I can proudly say that both my folks are two of my best friends! :D I feel the same way about my two fine Brothers. We are a real close family and I wouldnt have it any other way! Plus I married the best girl ever and she brought along an awesome brother and her parents, who I get along great with. It's good to have great friends. It's simply the best when those friends are also your family! Thanks for noticing how short I look in that picture! :x Must'a been in a rut or a hole as I am taller in person.

Where is that big rock on with the hol;e in the bottom-is it south of Moab-I swear I drove by it on the way home from Farmington-I really liked Utah-a nice mountain valley going south of Duchesne.

You live in a very unique and old area of our continent. Thanks for the photo essay of your holiday.

Note..... Next year take skis when turkey hunting.

Your memory is pretty good! It is south of Moab about 30 miles or so. The trip up to Duchesne is really pretty too. My Mom killed her bull elk last year just west of the road on which you traveled going to Duchesne. Looks like my Sister-in-law drew the same tag this year. :D :D :D

That country does really call out to a guy. I wouldn't mind spending some time traipsing around there for a few weeks for sure.
Thanks for the pics 'H.

What incredible photos ;that part of your country is beautiful .Turkeys or not, that sounds like an excellent vacation.
I would love to go exploring through those caves.
Thanks for sharing.

Enjoyed the tour. Been to your fine state. Hope to go back some day.
Hope this doesn't sound to dreary, but I've got some ashes to spread up there where he wanted to be. I can't think of a much prettier place to be set adrift in the wind. :-)

Someday hopefully a ways up the trail, i'd like mine scattered along a high trail while putting out salt. Or they can shoot me out of a muzzle loader. As long as I get to roam the mountains I'll be fine! :D Hope you are able to find a fine spot to honor a man who must of meant a bunch to ya. Swing on up and holler if ya need help in anyway or just need a Pepsi!~
