Turning out bulls, May 25, 2009

$1400 apiece was the purchase price for 30 bulls from this ranch,

Was that for spring delivery? The reason I am asking is I thought you paid .10$ over steer price for them in the fall and then had Swede winter them.
I may have misspoke when I said I wouldn't be raising bulls for what you paid.

That was last year and from another source. I bought from both of these outfits last year. Much as I would have liked to, I didn't get to the "bull day" last fall where the bulls were purchased that Big Swede wintered. Those bulls were purchased in the fall of 2007 weighing 685# @ $1.35 per pound ($925 per head). Big Swede wintered them for $1.30 per bull per day, bless his heart. :-) , which came to about $250 per bull for wintering costs.

My $1400 bulls were kept until May 20th, so the purchase price included wintering costs and the cost of the fertility check.

I guess I did misspeak then, I would have to think if someone wanted 30 bulls at $1400 per I would more than likely go along since I averaged $1850 with around $400 sale and advertising costs.

I thought Mr. Weed was crazy when I first heard about the way he markets his bulls after one season's use until I did the math. Just because a guy has the feed doesn't mean he has to feed it. The more I think about it his method is one that I need to seriously consider. One more example of why this site is so good, learning from each other.

looks like a good deal for everyone involved-a 12/13 month bull had better be fertile and ready to breed cows in my opinion. Before BSE we used to send a load of bulls to Wyoming every year that looked just like those dudes. I wished I'd of tok a picture of them all lined out along the Powder River when we delivered them.

nice lookin' set of bulls, Soap. They loook like they should have no problem gettin' the job done. Do buy a seperate set of bulls for your heifers or are there some heifer bulls in the bunch too?

Ten of the thirty were "heifer bulls," and I bought some others from another source, too. Five of the nine bulls I kept over the winter were also low birthweight bulls. Originally a neighbor that wintered some of our heifers had planned to AI them about the 20th of May. He ran short of feed too quick though, so we trailed those heifers home on the first of May. Then I had to do some quick shopping around to buy some more heifer bulls.
