Just as we got done the weather turned nasty..get that semi out fast!

Pretty much like it's done in Canada. Imagine that.

Only I don't usually have that much help pushing the auger.

The way you dress up that first photo it almost looks like that famous one of planting the flag on Iwa Jima.

We get our cake from Pride Grain in Martin, SD. Until last year it was known as Mueller's Feed Mill. The trucks that deliver the cake have their own hydraulically run belt-o-vators right on the side of the truck. The trucker can unload all by himself, whether we are home or not. He gets the long arm extended into the air, and can see through his rear view mirrors how to get backed up to the opening on the top of the overhead cake bin. This arrangement works pretty slick. He has the weight ticket along, and if we are around we write out a check for the feed. If the bill is paid within ten days of delivery, there is a 3% discount. For every ton we bought last year, there is a $4 per ton discount on that many tons this year. It is a pretty good system to keep repeat customers.

We don't have any big pelleted supplements like that around here. What kind of price does it have and what %protein? Thanks for the great and informative pictures. Stay warm!

The cake we bought is 20% protein and was booked back in July for $187 per ton delivered. The price on it now is about $80 per ton higher than it was back then.

Man that's cheap. I priced some for our replacement heifers today, and it was close to $400 per ton.

Of course, not many people use it around here becasue of corn and other crop stubble.

I sure like the idea of using it though.

Jassy, looks like you guys have a real nice set up for handling it.

Really good clear pictures on what looked like a cold morning.
$400 a ton ?? Must be something else. Probably higher % protein. I buy 20% all natural ( we call them cubes down here) in 50 lb sacks for $260 a ton which is enough. If you are paying $400 for that , you'd better look around.

16% pellets are $200 per ton bagged - $200 bulk here at the local feed mill.

Cargill's (Nutrena) are $260.

Local supplier is saying if the grain markets continue on course, feed prices will double next year.

Those cattle that are bred to and have the genetics to thrive on grass alone look better and better every day

Back when I bought feed in the bulk, they used a truck about like what Soapweed describes. It hat a live bottom and a long convayer which could be turned out and raised or lower by hydraulics driven from the truck. The conveyers were also hydraulic driven so no electricity was needed. We had a Welker bin like those on Jassy's picture only ours had two compartments. We bought this bin in 1989 for $2750.

Our fist lood in the fall would be weaning feed for the calves put in both compartments. The next load or loads would be supplement for the calves in one compartment and range cake in the other. There was about a $20 a ton discount for feed in the bulk and you didn't have the empty sacks to contend with. This paid for the bin in about 2 years.

I do not have enough cattle to buy in the bulk anymore so a neighbor uses my overhead bin.

That's what I was quoted, and that's why we aren't feeding them. A 50 lb sack from Purina for what they call Breeders Perfomance pellets were $10/bag. 20% protein.

I am sure if we bought it bulk, we could get it a little cheaper, but probably not much. I think more than anything is that it just isn't in demand here like it is in other areas. I talked to another company yesterday and they are supposed to get me a quote for them next week when the manager gets back.

Hubby got our cake for this year on contract way back when at $130 a ton...but we have our own truck and we go and get it straight from the plant,,so that might make a difference...He's just hoping he contracted enuff to get us to spring, cause the price sure has jumped up alot. Course it don't probably help that I feed a little extra on these really cold days,,,and I feed the deer too that hang around the cake bins..lol :P
