Johanns: No Need for Lengthy Delay on Re-opening Japan's Beef Market

Just a day after six members of Japan's food safety panel resigned and were replaced - media reports in Japan suggested a decision to re-open that country's market to U.S. beef might not come until 2007.

U.S. Ag Secretary Mike Johanns responded immediately - saying there's no scientific reason for such a lengthy delay - and that the U.S. Congress might not stand for it. Indeed - Johanns says the U.S. beef industry is ready to export product to Japan right now.

And Johanns continues to emphasize the U.S. is complying with international standards when it comes to Japanese beef - despite two-dozen cases of BSE in Japan. And he's literally promising the U.S. won't close its borders to Japanese beef - as long as it complies with those international standards.

Japan again closed its market to U.S. beef on January 20th - just weeks after ending a previous ban that lasted two years. The most recent ban - which Japan calls a temporary suspension - came after a New York beef packer accidentally sent a shipment of bone-in veal to Japan. While the shipment met U.S. and international standards - it violated the carefully orchestrated deal that re-opened the Japanese market in December.

Quit holding up business under laughable pretenses. Quit doing the big packers bidding and allow testing, and it would of happened two years ago.

Say Bill isn't this nice? Canada is gaining market share in Japan while the US dithers around the issues. Japan is sure impressed with our ID program.

You're pretty poor businessmen to be bragging to your competitors about a tool that you think gives you an advantage on them. Most businessmen go to extra efforts to hide their angles from their competitiors.

Sandhusker, do you think you could get the job done even if you knew the angles?

Big Muddy- Maple Leaf-- How much more money you sticking in your pocket because of mandatory ID--Are fats in Canada selling for $10-15 cwt more than the states? :???: Market share doesn't seem to count since you've sold your soles to be tied to the US trade....

These multinationals have the system tied up where they can work this beef and cattle back and forth to get the price they want to pay out for cattle....

There is already a lot of source verified cattle available in the US-- that isn't what is holding back the Japs- and there will be more if the price is there to make it worthwhile.....

   I would say that the poor business man is one who can't follow an example of how to do business DESPITE it being laid out before him for almost 3 years. MID and age verification are without a doubt the main reasons Japan is taking beef from Canada and not the US.

The fact that we are still around to stick any money into our pockets after May 20/03 is largely due to MID. Today compared to August 2003, I am sticking a heck of a lot more in my Wranglers. It may not be as much as the US but as we are very dependant on exports I think we did better than many expected.
