Cattle Alert: US Expands Ban On Mexican Cattle Imports

The U.S. expanded its cattle-import ban Wednesday from just one Mexican state to include several more states because of concerns over bovine tuberculosis, a U.S. Department of Agriculture spokesman said.

Lloyd Day told reporters that the additional Mexican states are being barred from exporting cattle to the U.S. because "they are not in compliance with the (USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service) TB eradication program."

Cattle Alert: US Expands Cattle Ban On One Mexico State

The U.S. expanded its cattle-import ban Wednesday to include one additional Mexican state because of concerns over bovine tuberculosis, a U.S. Department of Agriculture spokesman said.

Jim Rogers, a spokesman for USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, or APHIS, said the Mexican state of Chiapas cannot ship cattle to the U.S.

USDA announced on May 24 that it had closed the U.S. border to cattle imports from the Mexican state of Durango, because it believed cattle were being moved from a region of the state banned from export to the U.S. to a region allowed to export because of the disease.

Since then both Durango and Chiapas failed to be certified by Mexico for compliance with bovine tuberculosis regulations.

Five Mexican states - Colima, Quertaro, Sinaloa, Yucatan and Tamaulipas - have been certified by the Mexican government, and USDA is reviewing that certification, Rogers said. Other states are now undergoing review for Mexican certification but can export cattle to the U.S. during the process.

(It was incorrectly stated in an earlier story that cattle from several additional Mexican states were banned.)

Danged "protectionists"! Just imagine - a US organization trying to protect the USA from diseases! When will this insanity stop?

I can see it now! Next they will be wanting to test ALL cattle before they enter the country and fall into the "False Advertising" mode of protectionism.
