US food transport biosecurity threat
Austrailia
New controls over the transport of food, including feed for animals, start in the USA in December as part of their anti-terrorism campaign.

It is also being introduced to track the supply chain of all food materials following Mad Cow and other animal feed disease problems in the USA. No plans are to introduce such tough reporting methods in Australia - but given we've picked up the rest of the anti-terrorism/biosecurity regulations from the USA, will it be long? There is already discussion that this may be required to trace the full food chain for food imported into the USA. Some buit not all this information is now being collected via Australia's NLIS.

Under the Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002, the regulations cover not just the transport of food, buit also down to the cartage of hay and other feed for livestock, such as beef and dairy cattle, sheep and goats, destined to enter the food chain.

The regulations require documentation from the farmer and transporter of they sell, barter, give away or ship by truck, rail or ship hay or other feed.

The transporter must keep records of the source of the hay or feed, the recipient, origin and destination points and a description of the feed and the number of 'packages'.

The route which the feed was transported and any transfer points and the name of all transporters used in the delivery must be kept.

The US Food and Drug Administration requires details of transporting animal food to be kept for one year in either paper or electronic format.

If the FDA suspects foodstuffs have been tampered with, records must be produced within 24 hours.

The new regulation has led to the development of various logbooks and web based software. Details of the FDA requirements are on a supplier of web based tracking software www.scoringag.com

Were in the beginning with the salad packers as they only have lot codes which doesn't prove traceback when food safety is on the line. Three familys handle most of the spinach production in the US. They thought they didn't need ScoringAg , but now the shoe is on the other foot with so many sick. They have now called us in after the fact.
